Fetal Intra-abdominal Umbilical Vein Aneurysm

Abstract: The main prognostic feature associated with a poor outcome of umbilical vein aneurysm seems to be the presence of other anomalies. Early diagnosis is associated with a somewhat worse prognosis, and most fetal deaths have been observed between 27 and 30 weeks of gestation. In the third trimester, it is reasonable to perform serial ultrasound examinations to assess fetal growth, the size of the aneurysm, and the blood flow pattern within the aneurysm.

“…Umbilical vein varix can be seen in the form of intraabdominal umbilical vein varix, extra-abdominal umbilical vein varix, and umbilical vein aneurysm [18,19], among which the intra-abdominal varix is the most prevalent while the extra-abdominal varix and umbilical vein aneurysm are rare [20]. Normally, the internal diameter of the intraabdominal umbilical vein in normal fetuses grows proportionately with the increase of gestational age.…”

“…5 There are over 150 cases of isolated fetal umbilical vein aneurysm reported till date. 4 Earlier it was believed to be a serious anomaly which can cause 44% of intrauterine fetal death. 6 Due to the risk of mortality, induction of labor was done at 34 weeks in spite of the morbidity of prematurity.…”

“…An umbilical vein aneurysm is a rare prenatal diagnosis with limited literature available regarding management. Fetal umbilical vein aneurysm was first described in 1978 [1] and accounts for less than 4% of umbilical cord malformations [2,3]. Possible complications include aneurysm rupture, thrombosis, and compression of the umbilical cord leading to poor fetal outcome [4].…”
