Fetal growth restriction in hypothyroidism is associated with changes in proliferative activity, apoptosis and vascularisation of the placenta

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate fetal weight, histomorphometric changes and proliferative activity, apoptosis and angiogenesis of the placenta in rats with hypothyroidism. Thirty-six adult female rats were divided into two groups with 18 animals each: control and hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism was induced by daily administration of propylthiouracil (1 mg/animal). The administration began five days before becoming pregnant and the animals were sacrificed at 14 or 19 days of gestation. The control gr… Show more

“…The reduction in this area can affect the proper development of the placenta (Ashkar & Croy 1999). This change could be involved in the genesis of low birth weight and placental changes observed in rats with hypothyroidism and in rats treated with the same PTU doses used in this present study (Silva et al 2012).…”

“…The hypothyroid group received 1 mg/animal PTU 10 diluted in 5ml distilled water by orogastric gavage daily (Silva et al 2004, Silva et al 2012). Rats treated with T 4 received 50µg/animal/day L-thyroxine 11 (Serakides et al 2001, Freitas et al 2007) diluted in 5ml distilled water by orogastric gavage daily.…”
