“…En Chile se han realizado algunos estudios en hospitales asociados al ECLAMC (Estudio Colaborativo Latino Americano de Malformaciones Congénitas) con el objeto de determinar la cantidad de niños nacidos con diagnóstico de SD 5 , en ellos se ha descrito que los nacimientos de menores con SD se ha incrementado y entre los factores más frecuentemente referidos, está la edad de la madre. En Chile se estima una prevalencia de SD de 24,7/10.000 nacimientos, siendo la tasa más alta en Latinoamérica 6 y refiere que el principal factor causante es la postergación que la mujer chilena hace de su embarazo hasta la edad cercana a los 40 años, siendo esta condición uno de los factores más relevantes en la incidencia del SD, variable etiológica que también reportan otros autores 2,7,8 .
