Fetal Cardiac Function in Response to Long‐Term Maternal Terbutalin Treatment

Abstract: To evaluate whether long-term human fetal exposure to beta 2-adrenergic receptor agonists elicit alterations in the human fetal heart, a fetal echocardiographic examination was performed in 9 fetuses between the 24th and 35th week of gestation (median 28 weeks) and 9 age-matched controls. Examinations were performed during long-term tocolytic terbutalin treatment. Drug dosages varied between 7.5 and 20.0 mg/day (median 10.0 mg/day) and treatment durations prior to examination varied between 14 and 60 days (med… Show more

“…More recent investigations of FHR responses to maternal exercise have used healthy women and animals to determine if exercise is a hypoxic stress to a healthy fetus. Overall, FHR after exercise of moderate intensity is either unchanged 16,41,43,74–76 or increased significantly 6,12,18,36,50,53,57,77 . In one series, FHR required an average of 22 minutes to return to baseline after exercise 53 .…”

“…In previous examinations the effects of short-term intravenous and peroral administration of the betamimetic drugs on fetal heart rate pattern, placental and fetal blood flow and fetal left ventricular function have been studied (5,6). It has also been demonstrated that SID ratios of umbilical and uterine arteries decrease along with a concomitant increase in maternal and fetal heart rates associated with increasing infusion dose of ritodrine (7).…”

“…Existen una importante cantidad de estudios que se ocupan del comportamiento de la FCF como respuesta al ejercicio materno (21,22,(31)(32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37)(38). Aunque la gran variabilidad de diseño entre ellos hace que exista cierta controversia en cuanto al comportamiento de éste parámetro (16).…”
