Fertigation and growth regulator on coffee seedling production in tubes

Abstract: The use of quality seedlings is important in establishing a productive coffee crop. However, the most widely used method to produce coffee seedlings is time consuming (6-12 months) and lacks new production technologies. This study aimed to assess the use of fertigation and a growth regulator in the production of coffee seedlings, in order to develop a system faster than the conventional method. For that, Topázio coffee cultivar seeds were pre-germinated and planted in tubes filled with substrate (composted pin… Show more

“…Added to these is its higher cost when compared with the other fertilization methods, which use traditional fertilizers mixed with substrate or fertigation. Given that complete fertigation solutions with electrical conductivity between 1.5 and 2.0 dS m −1 have been used in plant (Ludwig and Fernandes 2013) and seedling production in substrate (Coelho et al 2018), a solution of 2.0 dS m −1 was studied.…”

“…Considering eight growth variables, the best C. arabica cv. Topázio seedling development occurs with complete nutrient solutions between 1.4 and 2.2 dS m -1 (Coelho et al, 2018).…”

“…Seeds were obtained from a Topázio cultivar coffee (C. arabica, originated from Catuaí amarelo and Mundo Novo, small size, medium fruit maturation and high productivity) crop in Uberaba, Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil, in May 2016. The seeds were extracted from fruits and germinated according Meireles et al (2007) and adapted by Coelho et al (2018). Seedlings with a 4 mm radicle were selected and planted in plastic cone-shaped containers (120 x 30 mm and volume of 50 cm 3 ), filled with composted pine bark-based substrate (Bioplant ® , minor components: sphagnum moss, coconut fiber, carbonized rice husk; properties: pH=6.5, EC=0.8 mS cm -1 , maximum water retention=100%).…”

“…Thus, fertigation enables the controlled application of nutrients adjusted to the phenological stages (COELHO et al, 2018) and, despite favoring the achievement of high yields in irrigated crops, if poorly managed, it can considerably increase the concentration of salts in the soil that, when exceeding plant tolerance limits, negatively affects crop growth and productivity (SILVA et al, 2013).…”
