Ferroptosis in Cancer Progression: Role of Noncoding RNAs

Abstract: Ferroptosis is a novel form of programmed cell death, and it is characterized by iron-dependent oxidative damage, lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species accumulation. Notable studies have revealed that ferroptosis plays vital roles in tumor occurrence and that abundant ferroptosis in cells can inhibit tumor progression. Recently, some noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), particularly microRNAs, long noncoding RNAs, and circular RNAs, have been shown to be involved in biological processes of ferroptosis, thus affec… Show more

“…35 Genetic variations of PRKAA1 associate with prognosis for patients with colorectal cancer [45]. Recently, studies have revealed that some noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), particularly microRNAs, long noncoding RNAs, and circular RNAs, were involved in the regulation of ferroptosis and affect cancer growth [46]. Moreover, Katsaraki et al proposed that ncRNA plays an important role in CLL and summarizes the important discovery about their value as regulators, biomarkers, or therapeutic targets in B-CLL [47].…”

“…Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent programmed cell death, can affect the prognosis of several tumors. A number of lncRNAs can alter the outcome of tumors by modulating the process of ferroptosis ( 237 ).In a study of Li et al. ( 238 ), the OSCC prognostic model was established on the basis of 8 frlncRNAs which have a prognostic role and expressed simultaneously with 25 mRNAs.…”

Their study supported a prognostic model in patients with OSCC comprised of 8 different frlncRNAs, including MIAT,AC099850.3, STARD4-AS1, AC090246.1, AC021087.4, HOTARM1,ALMS1-IT1and AL512274.1., which can be used as a prognostic indicator and immune evaluation in OSCC patients and can be subsequently be used as promising therapeutic targets in these patients (238).…”

“…Ferroptosis has become a hot research topic in tumor; the pathway network between iron metabolism, Fenton reaction, Xc-system, and GPX4 has been initially established ( 183 , 184 ); and other important related pathways (including transsulfur pathway) and ferroptosis-related drugs need to be further investigated. Current chemotherapy regimens for OC are still dominated by platinum and paclitaxel drugs, but the prognosis of patients with advanced OC remains bleak.…”
