Two products were isolated at a result of esterification of acrylic acid with 4-[4-(nhydroxyundecanyloxy)phenyl] benzoic acid (5). One is 4-[4-(n-acryloloxy-undecanyloxy)phenyl] benzoic acid (6), and tile other is 4-{4-[n-(3-acryloloxy-propionyloxy)undecanyloxy]phenyl}benzoic acid (7) which contains two molecules of acrylic acid. Compound 7 is obtained unexpectedly and still unknown in the literature. Its identification is confirmed by the isolation and characterization of the monomer 9. The mesogenic monomers 8 and 9 which were synthesized from 4-hydroxyphenyl 2(S)-[2(S)-methylbutoxy]propionate (4) and the corresponding acrylates 6 and 7 exhibit the enantiotropic Sc* and Sa phases. The Sc* phase temperature range is up to 31 C. The spontaneous polarization and response time for the monomers 8 and 9 is 97 and 16 nC/cm 2 as well as 90 and 64 Its respectively. It is the liquid crystal side chain polymer 11, not 1D, which is switchable in the presence of an electric field. The spontaneous polarization of 36 nC/cm e and the response time of 3.1 ms is obtained from the new polyacrylate.

New ferroelectric liquid crystals containing two chiral centers, 4‐(4′‐n‐alkyloxyphenyl)phenyl 4‐{2(S)‐[2(S)‐methylbutyloxy]propoxy}benzoate (4a‐4f) and 4‐(n‐alkyloxy)phenyl 4‐{4′‐[2(S)‐(2(S)‐methylbutyloxy)propoxy]phenyl}benzoate (5a‐5f) were synthesized and their physical properties studied. A phase‐transition sequence of C‐Sc*‐N*‐I was observed in most cases. Some homologues of them, 4a‐4d, possess monotropic Sc * phase. Not only the Sc* phase‐transition temperature of 5a‐5f is lower than that of the corresponding 4a‐4f, but their Sc * phase‐transition temperature range is also wider than the corresponding 4a‐4f. The Sc * phase temperature range can be up to 48 °C. The spontaneous polarization of 8‐28 nC/cm2 and the electric rise time of 240‐420 μs were measured in FLCs 4a‐5f.

Two new chiral alcohols, 2(S)‐[2(R)‐methylhexyloxy]propanol (5) and 2(S)‐[2(S)‐methylhexyloxy]propanol (6), were prepared from the corresponding propionic acid ethyl ester 1 and 2 in the presence of sodium borohydride. They were used as the chiral moiety for the synthesis of two diastereomeric liquid crystals 7 and 8. Both of them exhibit the phase sequence I‐SmA‐SmC*‐SmX‐Cr. The mesogenic properties of the (S,S)‐diastereomer 8 are more unique in comparison with those of the (S,R)‐diastereomer 7. It possesses not only lower SmA and SmC* phase transition temperature, 103 °C vs. 112 °C for SmA phase and 31 °C vs. 65 °C for SmC* phase, but wider SmA and SmC* phase range, 40 °C vs. 31 °C for SmA phase and 72 °C vs. 47 °C for SmC* phase. The diastereomer 8 also has a larger Ps value than that of 7, 24 vs. 15 nC cm−2 measured at Tc ‐ T = 10 °C. The difference in these mesogenic properties is discussed by comparing their conformation difference at the molecular part of benzoate.
