Santa Catarina State is endowed with a flora with great wealth and diversity. The impact that introduction and cultivation of exotic ornamental plants can have on biological diversity is incalculable, and knowledge is of prime importance in measuring this value for the preservation of species and the environment. The objective of this work was to evaluate the phenology of five native species with ornamental potential in the Serra do Oratório, located in the municipality of Bom Jardim da Serra, Santa Catarina State, and to conduct phenological studies of the species Calibrachoa sellowiana (Sendtn.) Wijsman, Baccharis nummularia Heering ex Malme, Trichocline catharinensis Cabrera, Tibouchina dubia (Cham.) Cogn. and Verbena rigida Spreng. Phenological studies occurred between August 2016 and July 2017, with samples of five plants of each species. In this period the occurrence of the phases was recorded: dormancy, vegetation, flower buds or visible inflorescences, full bloom, fruiting and fruit ripening. The esthetic variables evaluated were size, color, texture, line, shape, structure and symmetry of the species. The meteorological variables related to the phenological events were temperature (ºC), precipitation (mm) and insolation (h). The species Tibouchina dubia, Verbena rigida and Calibrachoa sellowiana, even with short flowering time, are indicated for use in landscaping in the region of South Catarinense Plateau. The meteorological variables evaluated were correlated with the phenophases of the species studied.

Floriferous herbaceous and substrates for use on extensive green roofs

In general, extensive green roofs are defined as all cover covered with herbaceous vegetation and surface substratum, however, in Brazil there are few information regarding the materials for installation and maintenance of these systems, being essential the search for better species and substrates adapted to the tropical conditions. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the performance of floriferous herbaceous and substrates for use in extensive green roofs. The experiment was carried out in the field and in full sunlight, in black plastic containers (8.46 L and 15.5 cm high), elevated 90 cm from the ground, in a 3x2 factorial scheme. Being 3 herbaceous floriferous species (Torenia var. Kauai, Periwinkle var. Pacifica XP and Petunia var. Bacopa) and 2 substrates [S1-Charcoal + pine bark + peat + expanded vermiculite (1v:1v:1v:1v) and S2- Coconut fiber + carbonized rice husk + peat + expanded vermiculite (1v:1v:1v:1v)], with 3 replicates per treatment. It was evaluated in the substrates: pH, electrical conductivity, macro and microporosity, total porosity, density and water retention capacity. For the development of the species, 60 days after the experiment installation, were evaluated, chlorophyll content of leaves, number of flowers and vegetation surface temperature. It was observed that the substrate S2 presented the best results in the physico-chemical analyzes, and this possibly came to reflect on the performance of the species, and that Torenia when cultivated in this substrate had the highest chlorophyll content (42.67 SPAD). The number of flowers was statistically the same for Torenia and Periwinkle in both substrates, while the three floriferous herbaceous plants showed a decrease in surface temperature. Thus, it is recommended for use on extensive green roofs the substrate composed of coconut fiber + carbonized rice husk + peat + expanded vermiculite (1v:1v:1v:1v), and the floriferous herbaceous Torenia var. Kauai.

Plantas ornamentais no Jardim Botânico FLORAS

Um jardim botânico é um espaço que proporciona a conservação ex situ da biodiversidade, mantendo plantas vivas. O Jardim Botânico FLORAS (JBFLORAS) ocupa o campus Sosígenes Costa (CSC) da Universidade Federal do Sul da Bahia (UFSB) e possui um remanescente de Mata Atlântica. O trabalho foi desenvolvido no CSC da UFSB, em Porto Seguro, Bahia, Brasil, área antes ocupada pelo Centro Cultural e de Eventos do Descobrimento. Foram realizadas coletas nos jardins do campus e na mata no período de março/2017 a fevereiro/2018. As plantas foram herborizadas e incorporadas ao herbário Prof. Geraldo C. P. Pinto (GCPP). Foram identificadas 86 espécies de plantas ornamentais distribuídas em 78 gêneros e 39 famílias. As famílias mais diversas em número de espécies foram: Arecaceae e Leguminosae (seis espécies); Asparagaceae, Bignoniaceae e Orchidaceae (cinco espécies); e Araceae, Bromeliaceae, Myrtaceae e Rubiaceae (quatro espécies). O hábito predominante foi o herbáceo (29 espécies), seguido pelo arbóreo (25 espécies) e arbustivo (20 espécies). Foram levantadas 10 espécies de plantas nativas com potencial ornamental presentes no fragmento de Mata Atlântica do JBFLORAS. A maior parte das espécies cultivadas (53,5%) tem origem exótica e 46,5% são nativas da Mata Atlântica. Sugere-se a introdução de outras espécies nativas aos espaços do Jardim Botânico no intuito de enriquecer a conservação ex situ e valorizar o uso das plantas nativas.
