Fenitrothion‐induced structural and functional perturbations in the yolk lipoproteins of the shrimp Macrobrachium borellii

Abstract: Two lipovitellin (LV) forms containing the same apoproteins but differing in their lipid composition were isolated from Macrobrachium borelii eggs at early (LVe) and late (LVI) embryogenic stages and characterized. These two forms of LV, as well as liposomes prepared with lipids extracted from them, were used as simpler models to study the effect of the pesticide fenitrothion (FS) on their structures and functions. Rotational diffusion and fluorescence lifetime of two fluorescent probes [1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hex… Show more

“…These insecticides, due to their different chemical structures, probably interact in different ways during chemoreception with lipoproteins/albumin, and this would generate variations in their transport and function (Kragh-Hansen 1981;Cszerhárti andForgács 1995, Silva et al 2004). The interactions of insecticides with lipoproteins of a crustacean and an arachnid have been described previously by García et al (2004) and Cunningham et al (2006).…”

“…Fenitrothion (FS, O,O-dimethyl O-(3-methyl-4nitrophenyl) phosphorothioate) is a powerful insecticide that has been widely used in the area for agricultural purposes and is currently used for mosquito control (Delatte et al, 2008). Our group has previously reported the effect of FS on some physicochemical parameters in M. borellii (Garcia et al, 2002(Garcia et al, , 2004(Garcia et al, ,2005. Therefore, the aim of the present work was: (a) to determine LC 50 of FS on the freshwater prawn M. borellii and (b) to assess the effects of sublethal concentrations of FS in this species using a variety of potential biomarkers including SOD, CAT, GST, and AChE activities, LPO levels and DNA damage.…”

“…The freshwater prawn Macrobrachium borellii is a decapod crustacean widespread in South America that lives in turbid, tepid waters in the Río de la Plata estuary (Boschi, 1981;Morrone and Lopretto, 1995). It posess one circulating VTG and one egg LV, whose lipid and protein composition have been previously characterized (García et al, 2002(García et al, , 2004. LV and VTG were found to be immunologically related and with a similar apoprotein composition (García et al, 2008).…”
