Fehlversorgungen in „BARF“-Futterplänen für einen Wurf Berner-Sennenhund-Welpen

Abstract: Inadequate supply with such nutrients during the growth phase can lead to severe developmental disorders, especially in large breed puppies. Therefore, a thorough review of self-made rations for puppies carried out by specialised veterinarians appears to be of utmost importance to avoid permanent damage during growth.

“…Rationen marginal. Die fettlöslichen Vitamine A und D können in Abhängigkeit von den Rationskomponenten sowohl sehr niedrig als auch extrem hoch sein [7,10,13]. In einer Untersuchung von Wendel et al konnte auch gezeigt werden, dass in einer kommerziellen BARF-Ration für Welpen, die als "Alleinfutter" deklariert war, nur 20 % der minimalen Empfehlung für die Kalziumzufuhr für Welpen enthalten war[18].…”

“…The diet has become increasingly popular as many owners view raw food as a more natural and healthier alternative to commercial pet food, but the actual benefits remain unproven ( Morelli et al ., 2019 ). Many studies raise the question of whether BARF can be considered an appropriate type of diet from a health ( Strohmeyer et al ., 2006 ; van Bree et al ., 2018 ; Davies et al ., 2019 ; Bottari et al ., 2020 ) and nutritional point of view ( Mack and Kienzle, 2016 ). The findings of this case report and those of two previous reports ( Berberich et al ., 2022 ; Campbel and Jones, 2023 ) underline that there is a real risk in regularly feeding dogs with homemade BARF recipes, as these can be accidentally prepared with raw meat contaminated by L. serrata infective nymphs.…”

“…A variety of commercial raw meat‐based diets (RMBD) and brands are available in most pet shops and supermarkets (Freeman & Michel, 2001; Freeman et al., 2013). RMBDs, which are not heat treated before they are refrigerated or frozen (Mack & Kienzle, 2016; Morgan et al., 2017; Stogdale, 2001), usually consist of uncooked meat, edible bones and organs from various types of animals. In recent years, RMBDs have gained increasing popularity among dog owners who prefer not to feed their pets conventional dry or canned pet food for several reasons (Empert‐Gallegos et al., 2020; Morelli et al., 2019; Morgan et al., 2017; Thomas & Feng, 2020; Viegas et al., 2020).…”
