Feeding habits of Pterodoras granulosus (Valenciennes) (Pisces, Doradidae) in the lower Plata Basin

Abstract: Feeding habits of Pterodoras granulosus (Valenciennes) (Pisces, Doradidae) in the lower Plata Basin. The feeding hiology of Rerodoras granulosus (armored catfish) was studied in an extensive area comprising two environments of diflerent characteristics, a typical lotie system, the Lower Parana River, and an environment transitional towards an estuarian system on the right margin o f the Rio de la Plata. The e u n a h a~c and hhardlv selective oraanism consumineveeetation and molluscs, whith littlc selectivity,… Show more

“…Fish have been reported to consume these mollusks, particularly the Doradidae Pterodoras granulosus, whose diet contains large amounts of C. fluminae and L. fortunei (Ferriz et al 2000;Gaspar da Luz et al 2002;Cantanhêde et al 2008). Although the eradication of aquatic invasive species is a difficult task (Vitule et al 2009), it is expected that intensive consumption can have an important role in their control.…”

“…Its consumption of L. fortunei and C. fluminae has been documented for the Paraná River basin (Ferriz et al 2000;Gaspar da Luz et al 2002;Cantanhêde et al 2008). The pharyngeal teeth, arranged in plates, are small, and the species' diet has been described as omnivorous, opportunistically taking the most available food (Gaspar da Luz et al 2002).…”

“…Pterodoras granulosus feed on fruit, seed, vegetables, crustaceans and fish (Panattieri & Del Barco, 1982;Darrigran & Colautti, 1994;Ferriz et al, 2000). Leporinus obtusidens has a similar diet, but includes small fish and mollusk (Mastrarrigo, 1950;Ringuelet et al, 1967).…”

“…Leporinus obtusidens has a similar diet, but includes small fish and mollusk (Mastrarrigo, 1950;Ringuelet et al, 1967). Due to their euriphagy, all these species have changed their diet because of the invasion by Corbicula fluminea and Limnoperna fortunei, mollusk from southeast Asian, in the Río de la Plata basin (Ferriz et al, 2000;García & Protogino, 2005). Netuma barba is a benthophagous species.…”

“…With the invasion of L. fortunei in the Neotropical region, dietary changes have been noted in omnivorous fishes, which have switched from a low quality, predominantly plantbased diet, to an energetically rich diet dominated by invasive mollusks (MONTALTO et al 1999, FERRIZ et al 2000, BOLTOVSKOY et al 2006, LOPES & VIEIRA 2012. With the invasion of L. fortunei, part of the organic matter in the turbid São Gonçalo Channel will be filtered and modified into a form available to organisms that cannot feed on small particles, like fishes.…”
