“…These three units together form a biological unit that phosphorylates and activates AMPK (Towler & Hardie, 2007). According to Richards et al (2010), AMPK, a conserved energy sensor, when activated in the hypothalamus by metabolic and environmental stresses that deplete cells of energy, can stimulate catabolic pathways in an attempt to restore the amount of energy available to the animal organism. Our results also confirm the functional relationship between LKB1 and AMPK in birds (Proszkowiec-Weglarz et al, 2006) and suggest that males have a more efficient physiological mechanism of protection against ATP depletion by LKB1 and AMPK action than females.…”
