The performance of clones of Rhopalosiphum padi and Sitobion auenae from England and Spain was examined on drought-stressed tillering winter wheat in an environment chamber at 14 k 1°C. Two different levels of drought stress and an unstressed control were established by different watering regimes which resulted in drought-stressed plants being smaller at the end of the experiment.The effect of drought stress to plants on aphid performance was not significantly different between the clones tested. Drought stress had no effect on aphid development time, nymphal mortality, the weight of teneral adults and the number of embryos in teneral adults up to the onset of reproduction in the first F, generation. The subsequent reproductive capacity, as measured by the effective and potential fecundity, and the reproductive rate, were much reduced on drought-stressed plants. However, there was only a small decrease in the intrinsic rate of increase (rm). Overall the clone of R. padi from Spain performed better than that from England, the development and prereproductive times being shorter and the fecundity higher in the Spanish clone, giving a higher rm. There were no differences in the fecundity and the rm between the Spanish and the English clones of S. auenae. The proportion of the F2 generation that was alate differed greatly between clones, and only the English S. auenae produced significantly more alatae on drought-stressed than on unstressed plants.

The association between host-plant mineral nutrients and insect herbivory is complex, idiosyncratic, and dynamic. Because of this we employed an unusual statistical method to evaluate the relationship between tenthredinid sawfly herbivory and concentrations of foliar nutrients in arroyo willow, Salix lasiolepis. We discovered that among 20 willow clones and between two years arroyo willow varied in the size (absolute concentrations) and shape (relative concentrations) of five mineral nutrients (Ca, Mg, N, P, and K). Similarly, the densities of five sawfly species varied in size and Shape among clones and between years. In 1984, relative densities, or shape, of the sawfly community was associated with relative concentrations, or shape, of foliar nutrients in 20 willow clones. In contrast, in 1985 absolute densities, or size, was associated with absolute concentrations, or size, of foliar nutrients. This shift from a shape to a size association between herbivory and foliar mineral nutrients may reflect the large difference in winter precipitation and sawfly densities between years: precipitation and sawfly densities were much greater in 1985 than in 1984.

The fecundity and reproduction rate of caged Myzus persicae on leaves of potato plants growing on nutrient solutions with different anion and cation ratios were measured. The levels of total and soluble N in the leaves and the reproduction rate were found to be positively correlated with the amounts of N in the nutrient solutions. Longevity and reproduction rate were considerably less on 4‐week‐old plants than on 8‐week‐old plants; this difference is not correlated with the total N or soluble N‐content of the leaves. When comparing aphid development on plants, daily variations in the amounts of N compounds in the leaves could provoke an erroneous basis for assessing the physiological condition of the host plant. Résumé RELATION ENTRE LA NUTRITION MINÉRALE DE LA POMME DE TERRE ET LE POTENTIEL DE REPRODUCTION DE MYZUS PERSICAE Des pucerons Myzus persicae sont élevés individuellement dans des cages sur des feuilles de pommes de terre. Chaque expérience comporte deux groupes de plantes les unes âgées d'un mois, les autres de deux mois. Les plantes sont alimentées avec des solutions nutritives dans lesquelles le rapport d'anions ou cations est différent, mais qui demeurent ioniquement équilibrées. La reproduction de Myzus persicae, sur les plantes du même âge, montre une corrélation avec la quantité de N dans la solution nutritive et avec la teneur des feuilles en N total ou en N soluble. Le taux reproduction sur des plantes âgées de deux mois est en moyenne plus élevé que sur les plantes âgées d'un mois. Cette différence n'est pas en corrélation avec la teneur des feuilles en N total ou N soluble. Sur des plantes âgées de deux mois le nombre de jours productifs par femelle est plus élevé que sur des plantes âgées d'un mois. La teneur des feuilles en composés azotés peut montrer des fluctuations quotidiennes importantes; pendant la durée de l'expérience un échantillonnage fréquent est indispensable à l'obtention de données reproductibles. Le rapport de K/Mg dans les solutions nutritives n'a pas une influence significative sur la fécondité des pucerons. La teneur en eau des feuilles n'est pas influencée par les différentes solutions nutritives ni par l'âge de la plante. Si on permet aux pucerons de se développer librement sur les plantes, on constate que la densité de population est la même sur les différentes solutions nutritives. La nutrition minérale n'influence pas de façon significative les pourcentages de production d'insectes ailés.
