Fecal Galectin-3: A New Promising Biomarker for Severity and Progression of Colorectal Carcinoma

Abstract: Background and Objectives The aim of the study was to determine systemic and fecal values of galectin-3 and pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in patients with CRC and the relationship with clinicopathological aspects. Methods Concentrations of galectin-3, TNF-α, TGF-β, IL-10, and IL-1β were analyzed in samples of blood and stool of 60 patients with CRC. Results Systemic concentration of TNF-α was significantly lower in patients with severe diseases (advanced TNM stage, nuclear grade, and poor histological d… Show more

“…Our recent research has shown higher systemic concentration of Gal-3 in end stage renal disease patients infected with hepatitis C virus, suggesting on hepatoprotective role of Gal-3 from virus destruction[38]. Our other study revealed higher fecal concentration of Gal-3 and higher Gal-3/TNF-α ratio in patients with more severe form of colorectal cancer, thus suggesting immunosuppressive effect of Gal-3 on antitumor immune response[39]. Moreover, Tsai et al[40] showed that Gal-3 favors accumulation of regulatory T cells in the colon mucosa which suppresses inflammation and decreases the severity of dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis.…”

“…A lot of studies have demonstrated pleiotropic biological functions of Gal-3. Our previous studies about Gal-3 revealed the hepatoprotective function of Gal-3 from hepatitis C virus damage, as well as the immunosuppressive role of Gal-3 on antitumor immunity [ 44 , 45 ]. Filer et al [ 46 ] showed that Gal-3 stimulates persistence of the inflammatory infiltrate in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.…”

“…Galectin-3 is also highly abundant in stool, and fecal galectin-3 levels were increased in colorectal carcinoma patients with advanced tumor node metastasis (TNM) score, higher nuclear grade, poor tumor tissue differentiation and metastatic disease ( Figure 4 ). Positive correlations between fecal galectin-3 concentrations and the cancer biomarkers alpha-fetoprotein and carcinoembryonic antigen were also observed [ 178 ]. Thus, the determination of not only urinary but also fecal galectin-3 levels might provide useful clinical information in advanced colorectal cancers.…”
