Background: The high prevalence of glaucoma is accompanied by a steady decline of functional activity due to a significant visual deficit and deterioration of the geriatric status of patients, which is currently insufficiently studied. In the presence of visual deficiency, specialists mainly correct it by surgical methods, but rehabilitation measures aimed at improving the geriatric profile among senile and elderly people are rarely carried out. The aim of the study: To analyze the effect of rehabilitation measures on the geriatric profile of patients with glaucoma. Materials and methods: The study involved 165 elderly and senile patients with glaucoma (the main group), among whom, after laser trabeculoplasty, rehabilitation measures with a geriatric orientation were carried out: physical exercises to improve eye coordination and hand movements; performing cognitive gymnastics; strength exercises; increasing social communications; increasing vegetable protein in the diet, the use of nutraceuticals "Frezubin". In the control group (108 patients), only surgical treatment of glaucoma was performed. A year after rehabilitation, a comprehensive geriatric assessment was performed with the identification of leading clinical deficiency syndromes. Results: Among senile and elderly patients with glaucoma of the main group, at the time of completion of observations, the prevalence of fall risk syndrome significantly decreased from 49.1±4.0 to 22.8±1.9 cases per 100 patients (p<0.01) with a significant difference compared to the control group. Among the patients of the main group, the prevalence of the syndrome of falls and cognitive impairments also decreased. In the control group of patients with glaucoma, only the prevalence of falls syndrome decreased. BACKGROUND: Along with an increase in the number of elderly and senile populations, there will simultaneously be an increase in the prevalence of age-associated ophthalmopathology and sarcopenic obesity, which can potentially contribute to a decrease in patients’ activities in everyday life, but the latter remains practically unexplored, and if analyzed, then without the use of special scales for patients with visual organ pathology or quality of life indicators. AIM: To study the effect of sarcopenic obesity and age–associated ophthalmopathology on the activities of patients in everyday life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 125 mature and elderly patients suffering from sarcopenic obesity combined with cataract and 138 patients of similar age with sarcopenic obesity combined with glaucoma were examined. Sarcopenic obesity was detected by the presence of obesity with a body mass index ≥30,0 kg/m2 and sarcopenia on the scale of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in older people, supplemented by carpal dynamometry. RESULTS: It was found that, in comparison sarcopenic obesity with age-related cataracts, it has a more significant effect on changing activities in daily life, contributing to the formation of complete dependence on outside help (12,18 points) compared with sarcopenic obesity and glaucoma (10,18 points) (p 0,001), when moderate dependence on others was found. However, regardless of the nosology of the ophthalmic disease, in both clinical groups, the leading limitations of activities in daily life were needle threading (1,84±0,03 vs 1,52±0,02 points), nail clipping (1,75±0,03 vs 1,43±0,04 points), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained can be used in gerontology in the implementation of measures to correct and maintain functionality in the daily life of patients with sarcopenic obesity combined with glaucoma and cataracts.

Despite the frequent combination of cognitive impairments in patients with cataracts and glaucoma, the latter remain insufficiently studied with various visual deficits. The purpose: to study the association of visual deficits in cataracts and primary open–angle glaucoma with cognitive impairment. The clinical study involved 326 elderly patients with cataracts and 318 elderly patients with primary openangle glaucoma. The diagnosis of this ophthalmology was performed according to generally accepted methods. The degree of cognitive impairment was determined according to the Mini-Mental-State-Examination (MMSE) scale. Visual deficit was assessed by visual acuity without correction. It was found that with low visual deficit (visual acuity without correction of 0,51–0,60 and over 0,61) in the examined patients with cataract, the average score on the MMSE scale varied from 28,7 ± 0,4 to 28,8 ± 0,6 points, and in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma from 28,3 ± 0.5 to 28,5 ± 0.6 points with no significant differences in both cases. With severe visual deficit (visual acuity without correction to 0,20 and 0,21–0,30), the average score on the MMSE scale varied from 15,2 ± 0,3 to 17,4 ± 0,4 and from 13,8 ± 0,4 to 17,6 ± 0,3, respectively. The correlation coefficient between visual acuity without correction and the average MMSE score in patients with cataract was +0,436, and in patients with glaucoma — r = +0,482. The presence of an association of visual acuity without correction with cognitive dysfunction is also confirmed by regression analysis, which allows us to consider vision deficiency as a marker of cognitive impairment and can be used in monitoring them in patients with cataracts and glaucoma.
