Features of Intellectual Functions Inhibition among Ukrainian Boxers: A Sociocultural Study

Abstract: The effects of boxing's extreme aggressive conditions in training and competitive activity in sportsmen's mental working capacity still remains under-explored. While the neurophysiological effects caused by micro traumas to the brain have been extensively studied, less attention has been paid to the psychological consequences. This article reports on our study of the features of mental operations efficiency in Ukrainian boxers. The study involved athletes (n = 168, gender: men, average age: 25.5 ± 6.2 years), … Show more

“…Both divisions of the nervous system, i.e., the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, significantly interact with the immune system, influencing the way the body responds to stressful events. The central nervous system plays a crucial role in the activation of stress responses, as it regulates the autonomic nervous system and interprets events as potentially threatening (Ivanchenko et al, 2020;Krutsevich et al, 2021).…”

“…A timely response to the changed state is important for affected combatant as wells as for commanders, doctors, and psychologists to provide early assistance. By studying the inhibition of intellectual functions, Timchenko et al (2020) found that stress could impair the cognitive capabilities of an individual, worsen the high-speed physiological characteristics necessary for combat training, exhaust mental activity, and develop criticality and impulsivity. A complicating factor in the stressful manifestation is organic damage that causes acute shock reactions, slowness, impaired mental performance, and loss of consciousness.…”
