Feature mismatch effects in auditory negative

Abstract: A handful of studies have revealed that withholding a response to a sound causes impaired responding to that sound when subsequently presented (Buchner & Steffens, 2001;Mondor, Leboe, & Leboe, 2005). In the present study, we investigated whether a switch in the location of a repeated sound might represent an additional source of this auditory negative priming effect. In all three of our experiments, participants performed a series of trials in which they withheld a response to a dichotic pair of prime sounds p… Show more

“…However, NP has also been observed with auditory stimuli (Leboe, Mondor & Leboe, 2006;Mayr & Buchner, 2007), with tactile stimuli (Frings, Bader, & Spence, 2008), and even with odors (Olsson, 1999). In addition, NP has been observed in cross-modal tasks (so far, only audition combined with vision; Buchner, Zabal, & Mayr, 2003) and even more intriguing -in the study of Buchner et al (2003) -the size of the NP effect did not depend on the modality.…”

“…Importantly, though, identitybased NP has also been demonstrated in the auditory modality (e.g., Leboe, Mondor, & Leboe, 2006;Mayr & Buchner, 2007), in touch (Frings, Amendt, & Spence, 2011;Frings, Bader, & Spence, 2008), and even in olfaction (Olsson, 1999). Furthermore, Buchner, Zabal, and Mayr (2003) induced crossmodal identity-based NP using both auditory and visual stimuli.…”
