Feasibility Study of Scalable 16×16 SOA-Based Optical Switches on IMOS for Data Communication Application

Abstract: We analyze the design of O-band SOA-based switch architectures in the IMOS platform. Emulated 16×16 switches, designed with different architectures, show a worst-case 3dB penalty for the case of 7 cascaded SOAs with 4-channel WDM@25Gbps.

“…An optical switch is a device that selectively switches optical signals from one channel to another. Optical switches have different types based on their structure and operation, the most important of which are electrooptical [1][2][3], all-optical switching [4][5][6] thermal-optical [7] and [8], plasmonic [9][10][11][12], magnetic-optical switches [13], based on MEMS [14], SOA [15] and photonic crystals [16].…”
