This work describes a simple and rapid screening method for direct speciation of arsenobetaine (AsB) in tuna fish tissue and total As in tuna fish tissue and robalo liver using SLS-GF AAS. All procedures were proposed after careful optimization of pyrolysis and evaluation of chemical modifiers. Best results for total As were acquired using 25 µg Pd + 15 µg Mg + 0.1% w/v Triton X-100 in tuna fish (4.4 ± 0.3 mg kg-1) and 100 µg Pd + 0.1 % w/v Triton X-100 solution in robalo liver (10.3 ± 0.6 mg kg-1) as chemical modifiers. The direct speciation of AsB (3.6 ± 0.4 mg kg-1) in tuna fish was achieved when 5 µg Pd + 3 µg Mg + 0.1% w/v Triton X-100 was used as a chemical modifier. Accuracy was verified using a tuna fish certified reference material (CRM BCR 627), with statistically equivalent concentrations (Student’s t-test) for both total As and AsB.

Cooking is imperative for beans owing to the presence of compounds that can negatively affect nutritional value. Additionally, the heating of beans can increase protein digestibility and induce desirable sensory properties. However, cooking also causes considerable changes in the composition of numerous chemical constituents, including amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. For this, effects of domestic cooking on the essential element concentrations in various beans species (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were investigated using jalo, fradinho, rajado, rosinha, bolinha, black, and common species. Elemental determination was made with flame atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry after sample digestion in a closed-vessel microwave oven using a diluted oxidant mixture. Analytical methods were evaluated with an addition and recovery test and analysis of certified reference materials (apple and citrus leaves). Ca, Cu, K, and Mg were present mainly in rajado, Cu in jalo, Fe in black, S and Zn in fradinho, and P in rosinha species. Thermal treatment did not affect Cu, Fe, S, and Zn concentrations, but it increased Ca, K, Mg, P, and Zn concentrations in jalo and black species. Ca concentration decreased in fradinho and rajado species, as did Fe concentration in jalo and rajado species.

One of the unresolved issues of the European Water Framework Directive is the unavailability of realistic water reference materials for the organic priority pollutants at low nanogram-per-liter concentrations. In the present study, three different types of ready-to-use water test materials were developed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and tributyltin (TBT) at nanogram-per-liter levels. The first type simulated the dissolved phase in the water and comprised of a solution of humic acids (HA) at 5 mg L−1 dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and a spike of the target compounds. The second type of water sample incorporated the particulate phase in water. To this end, model suspended particulate matter (SPM) with a realistic particle size was produced by jet milling soil and sediments containing known amounts of PAHs, PBDEs and TBT and added as slurry to mineral water. The most complex test materials mimicked “whole water” consequently containing both phases, the model SPM and the HA solution with the target analytes strongly bound to the SPM.
