Feasibility of Cognitive Training in Critically Ill Patients: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Cognitive training exercises used in this study were feasible for intensive care unit patients (including cooperative patients with delirium) and their nurses. More research is needed to determine the clinical effect of the exercises on delirium outcome.

“…Cognitive training is commonly applied as a method of providing stimulation to different areas of the brain, and it is regarded as a promising, nonpharmacological preventative intervention in several different populations [29, 30]. This type of training for PLWD usually involves the guided practice of a set of standardized tasks to exercise the brain across various cognitive domains including processing speed, attention, and memory [31].…”

“…Recommended sources for evaluation in the ICU and acute care settings include objective mental status screens, such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, or measures more specific to delirium in critical illness and could be administered, for example, the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU; Ely et al, 2001). Assessment of alertness and agitation may also be warranted, such as the Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale (RASS) scores (Wassenaar, Rood, et al, 2018). A subjective measure to indicate the different aspects of cognitive function on subjective relative to objective assessments in delirium that has been used in the ICU is the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (Broadbent et al, 1982;Brück et al, 2019;Wassenaar, de Reus, et al, 2018).…”
