Feasibility and safety of temporary subcutaneous venous figure-of-eight suture to achieve haemostasis after ablation of atrial fibrillation

Abstract: Figure-of-eight suture is a fast closure technique that can be used as an efficient alternative to usual compression methods to prevent bleeding during high-intensity anticoagulation and the use of large-diameter venous sheaths and multiple femoral venous accesses.

“…Manual compression (MC) after sheath removal to achieve postprocedure venous hemostasis has been the traditional standard; however, suture techniques, such as the figure‐of‐eight sutures (F8S), are now widely used as an alternative. F8S has been shown to be equally effective and safe as MC, but it does have some disadvantages . Suture knots can fragment when cut and can be difficult to remove.…”

“…Our study concerning modified percutaneous skin closure after PVI as an inexpensive alternative for reducing severe complications should be seen in this context. In recent studies, the “figure‐of‐eight” suture was described as a possible closure method after single‐sided venous punctures. These studies were performed on a relatively small number of patients with a different anticoagulation regimen and only after CB procedures with unilateral punctures, and one of the studies had no control group .…”

These studies were performed on a relatively small number of patients with a different anticoagulation regimen and only after CB procedures with unilateral punctures, and one of the studies had no control group . The “figure‐of‐eight” closure was not described for the simultaneous removal of two large‐caliber venous sheaths and for bilateral punctures after RF ablation.…”
