Experiences and Strategies of Young, Low-Income, African-American Men and Families Who Navigate Violent Neighborhoods and Low-Performing Schools

Violent neighborhoods and low-performing schools continue to devastate young, low-income, African-American men and their families, despite individual and family use of kin and peer network navigation strategies. To learn more, interviews were conducted with 40 young African-American men, ages 18 to 22, from Baltimore City enrolled in a general equivalency diploma (GED) and job training program, and analyzed with modified grounded theory. Young men identified unsafe neighborhoods, chaotic schools, and disengaged teaching. Young men used safety and success strategies such as avoiding trouble and selecting positive peers to navigate unsafe environments. African-American families utilized kin network strategies such as messaging and modeling success, and mobilization for safety. Limits of unrecognized and unsupported strategies were related to: mobilization, limited educational partnership, and disproportionate family loss. Results indicate the continued urgent need for: (1) targeted violence reduction in high-violence neighborhoods, (2) calm and effective learning environments, (3) higher ratios of teachers to students to reduce chaos and improve learning, and (4) genuine teacher partnerships with families to improve access to positive role models, academic supports, and positive peer network development.

Aim. Estimation of the correlation of self-perceived health (SPH) with social and psychological environment, lifestyle and cardiovascular risk markers in middle-aged men.Material and methods. A total of 301 men aged 41-44 years were examined. The study included clinical examination and interrogation using a standard form. Physical activity was estimated with the help of the International Physical Activity Questionnaires, the level of psychosocial stress – with the Reeder scale, signs of vital exhaustion with the Maastricht Questionnaire Vital Exhaustion Scale. To evaluate the mode and quality of life the questionnaire developed by I.A. Gundarev was used. All the examined people were divided in three groups according to the distribution of SPH rates by tertiles: the group 1 (from 7 to 60 scores) – bad health, the group 2 (61-79 scores) – satisfactory and the group 3 (80-100 scores) – good health.Results. Parameters of the social and psychological environment of middle-aged men were the basic determinates of their health self-perception, at that majority of the indices of the quality and mode of life were independent of family material well-being. Bad SPH in middle-aged men was determined by such parameters as: increased blood pressure (BP), abdominal obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, psychosocial stress, vital exhaustion, low physical activity. Material wealth influenced systolic BP level, the waist/hips circumference ratio, a number of cigarettes per day and thus the SPH status. The most significant determinants of SPH were the level of personal happiness, nervous stress at work, support by family, sports activities, working conditions, total cholesterol level, satisfaction with own work.Conclusion. When working on programs focused on public health improvement the social, psychological and behavioral determinants of health selfperception must be considered.

Background According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 44,000 people are forced to flee their homes every day due to conflict or persecution. Although refugee camps are designed to provide a safe temporary location for displaced persons, increasing evidence demonstrates that the camps themselves have become stressful and dangerous long-term places-especially for women. However, there is limited literature focused on refugee women's perspectives on their insecurity. This qualitative study sought to better understand the ways in which women experienced insecurity at a refugee camp in Kenya. Methods and findings Between May 2017 and June 2017, ethnographic semi-structured interviews accompanied by observation were conducted with a snowball sampling of 20 Somali (n = 10) and Ethiopian Oromo (n = 10) women, 18 years and older, who had had at least 1 pregnancy while living in Kakuma Refugee Camp. The interviews were orally translated, transcribed, entered into Dedoose software for coding, and analyzed utilizing an ethnographic approach. Four sources of insecurity became evident: tension between refugees and the host community, intra-or intercultural conflicts, direct abuse and/or neglect by camp staff and security personnel, and unsafe situations in accessing healthcare-both in traveling to healthcare facilities and in the facilities themselves. Potential limitations include nonrandom sampling, the focus on a specific population, the inability to record interviews, and possible subtle errors in translation. Conclusions In this study, we observed that women felt insecure in almost every area of the camp, with there being no place in the camp where the women felt safe.
