[Fe2(Sb2S6)(CO)6]2+:  A Cationic Group 15/16 Metal Cluster

Abstract: The first group 15/16 cationic metal complex [Fe2(Sb2S6)(CO)6][SbF6]2·2SO2 is formed when [S8][Sb2F11]2 is reacted with 3 equiv of iron pentacarbonyl in liquid sulfur dioxide at room temperature. The cationic cluster is formed from an Sb2S6 cage capped on each end through η1-S, η2-S2 bound Fe(CO)3 units. There is a center of inversion at the centroid position of the Sb2S6 cage. The antimony source is apparently the starting anion [Sb2F11]-. This appears to be an unprecedented example of the reaction of a catio… Show more

“…4 A few unique reactions generated antimony ligands from the reactions of elemental antimony with [CpMo(CO) 3 ] 2 , 5 of the nortricyclic Zintl ion Sb 7 32 with Ni(CO) 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 6 and of S 8 (Sb 2 F 11 ) with Fe(CO) 5 . 7 The reaction of [CpCr(CO) 3 ] 2 1 with 6 mol equiv. of Sb 2 S 3 in toluene under ultrasonication at ambient temperature for 48 h, led to the isolation of [CpCr(CO) 3 ] 4 (Sb 2 S) 2 (19.3%), [CpCr(CO) 2 ] 2 (Cr•Cr) 3 (5.8%) and Cp 2 Cr 2 (CO) 4 S 4 (46.6%) from the product mixture.…”

“…Furthermore it demonstrates impressively, that the development of new synthetic methods seems to have no limits: the cationic cluster 66 is formed as the SbF 6 salt from [Fe(CO) 5 ] and S 8 (Sb 2 F 11 ) 2 in liquid SO 2 by Sb transfer from the anion into a cationic sulfur complex. [114] Although the presented area of research is mainly motivated by the fascination for the unusual and surprising structures, one should also always bear in mind the mechanisms and reaction pathways. Thus, metathesis reactions of mixed anions with transition metal halide complexesÐthe only example is shown in Equation (8)Ðrepresent an astonishingly neglected route, which might even be used for the incorporation of intact anionic clusters.…”
