FDG-PET/CT in lymphoma

Abstract: Lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of diseases that arise from the constituent cells of the immune system or from their precursors. 18F-fludeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) is now the cornerstone of staging procedures in the state-of-the-art management of Hodgkin's disease and aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It plays an important role in staging, restaging, prognostication, planning appropriate treatment strategies, monitoring therapy, and detecting recurrence. … Show more

“…However, it was also reported that if chemotherapy is initiated in an early stage in patients with a good physical status, the 3-year overall survival rate increases to 33% following successful treatment [9,49], which is approximately similar to that of the total 5-year overall DLBCL survival rate of 30-50%. [10] Therefore, the challenge is to diagnose the disease on the basis of symptoms, the levels of tumor markers such as sIL-2R, and imaging studies such as US, CT, and MRI, and to initiate chemotherapy in earlier stages [50,51].…”

“…41 As referred to in Herrmann, 17,42 biopsy of all lesions for verifying the presence of lymphoma was considered unethical. PET/CT is highly accurate in the identification of lymphoma but the sensitivity and specificity are not 100%.…”

“…It can also be effective, when used in conjunction with MRI, in identifying perineural spread [15], as in this case. PET CT also plays a major role in evaluating response to therapy [16] and its role in detecting relapse is well established [17]. …”
