O lagarto teídeo endêmico do Cerrado Kentropyx paulensis está classificado nas categorias “Em Perigo” e “Vulnerável” pelas listas do estado de São Paulo e Minas Gerais, respectivamente, sendo, portanto, considerado ameaçado. Com isso, esse trabalho objetivou compilar registros de K. paulensis obtidos em diversos trabalhos realizados no Planalto Ocidental Paulista, que ocupa praticamente metade da área total do Estado de São Paulo, sudeste do Brasil. Foram registradas ocorrências em sete municípios (Anhembi, Assis, Castilho, Jaú, Piracicaba, Quatá e Santa Bárbara d’Oeste) no período quente e chuvoso (dezembro a março) em fitofisionomias que vão desde ambientes naturais como Cerradão e Floresta Estacional Semidecidual até ambientes antropizados como reflorestamentos e pastagens de Urochloa sp. O intenso processo de alteração da paisagem que o Planalto Ocidental Paulista passou no século passado, fruto do modelo econômico que o estado adotou, pode ter colaborado para a diminuição de áreas viáveis para a manutenção dessas populações. Estes novos registros indicam que a ocorrência da espécie pode ser mais ampla, fruto de adaptações às recentes conversões de solo e ambientes naturais ocorridos no Estado de São Paulo.

Native Ilex paraguariensis (yerba mate) is one of the most widespread crops in the Atlantic Forest region of southern South America and has an important economic and cultural value in Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Despite the known potential of shade-grown products (especially cocoa and coffee) to protect biodiversity, the benefits of shade-grown yerba mate for biodiversity conservation in the Atlantic Forest remain scarce, one of the most threatened ecoregions in the world, also considered a biodiversity hotspot. In order to understand these potential benefits, it is important to identify how species use shade-grown yerba mate plantations, as well as if it can be an strategy to improve or maintain biodiversity in complex socio-ecological landscapes. We analysed the potential benefits of forests with shade-grown yerba mate for birds, amphibian and reptiles in the Reserve for National Park 'San Rafael' and its buffer area (Itap ua Department, Paraguay). We evaluated differences in species richness and composition between three environments: forest with shade-grown yerba mate, forest edge and monoculture crop plantations analysing beta diversity. A total of 112 bird species were recorded in all three environments. Regarding the herpetological community, we recorded 10 species (seven amphibians and three reptiles). Our results indicate that forests with yerba mate plantations not only maintains the bird species richness, but also its species composition differs significantly from edge and croplands, which might be an indicator of the contribution of shade-grown yerba mate plantations to conservation. The results of the research would help to value the impact of sustainable agroforestry activities for the conservation of Atlantic Forest biodiversity. The predominant native vegetation is the semideciduous seasonal forest with small portions of woodland savanna, Cerrado domain (Barros, Menezes, Falconi, & Giovanelli, 2017). The climate is warm and humid tropical with a maximum temperature of 30.1 ± 0.37 ºC, a minimum temperature of 17.3 ± 0.52 ºC, and an average temperature of 22.8 ± 0.40 ºC (data obtained in the Cambuhy's weather station during 2014-2016).…”

Reunion in the overseas: introduced wild boars and cultivated orange trees interact in the Mata Atlântica (Brazil). Novel interactions are attracting a lot of interest, especially those occurring between wild animal species and agricultural crops as a consequence of human activities. Novel interactions usually concern to species that interact only because human activity but that otherwise would not even coexist. Typically novel interactions arise from biological invasions as well as from interactions between native and crop species. Less studied are novel interactions between species that originally interact in their native range but, as consequence of human activity (domestication, game introductions, etc.), are now interacting out of their original distribution under new ecological conditionsIn this article, we study the interaction between orange and wild boar, both species sharing Asian origin but being introduced in America and then subjected to new ecological conditions. Dispersers of sweet orange seeds are unknown. As wild boar consumes fruits frequently in citrus orchards, here we assessed whether i) it consumes orange seeds, ii) they are viable after passing through boar’s digestive tract and iii) orange seedlings may naturalise in the Mata Atlântica of Brazil, in a citrus farm surrounded by a large natural area called Mata da Virgínia. We used camera surveys in the orange orchards and in the jungle to identify orange fruit consumers in two periods in 2014 and 2015. The jungle was additionally surveyed looking for citrus seedlings finding more than 50 seedlings in which it was confirmed that they belong to sweet orange trees by SSR techniques. As the wild boar was identified as the main orange consumer, 19 fresh boar feces were collected and citrus seeds removed and sown to assess their viability. Citrus seeds were also planted in the jungle and their germination and seedling survival were studied. Three years after sowing, just 5% of the seedlings remained alive with an average height of less than 10 cm.
