The fatty acid composition of seed oils of eight Ranunculaceae was determinated in order to characterize new sources of gamma-linolenic acid. Fatty acids were identified as fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) by capillary gas-liquid chromatography (GC) and capillary GCFourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). For trienic FAME the use of a cyanopropylpolysiloxane stationary phase (CP-Sil 88) allowed the separation with high resolution of methyl ester of columbinic acid (trans-5,c/s-9,ds-12 18:3) and gamma-linolenic acid (cis-6,cis-9,cis-12 18:3).The results confirmed the presence of columbinic acid in Thalictrum seed oils, and that of gamma-linolenic acid in A n e m o n e and related species seed oils. The taxonomic subdivision of Ranunculaceae into sub-families and tribes, which resulted from morphological considera tions, did not account for the above results.

“…However, in the Ranunculaceae and in a number of other plant families, seed oils have been found that contain smaller or larger percentages of AS-18:3 acids (Smith, 1970;Takagi and Itabashi, 1982;Takagi et al, 1983). The most prominent of these is columbinic acid ( 5 t ,9c, 12~-18:3;Cb) in Aquilegiu (Kaufmann and Barve,196.5) and Thalictrum (Rankoff et al, 1971;Wu et al, 1980), two genera of the Ranunculaceae. In these species, all the A5 acids found apparently have the trans configuration.…”

y-Linolenic acid (6c,9c, 12c-18:3) has recently become important for dietary and pharmaceutical applications. The reported occurrence of y-linolenic acid in seed oils from plant families known to produce fatty acids, including 18:3 acids, with AS-cis and AS-trans double bonds makes it necessary to distinguish between Sc,9c,12c-, St,9c,12c-and 6~,9~,12~-octadecatrienoic acids by gas chromatography (CC) alone in routine screening operations. The separation of these acids using two different capillary GC systems has been investigated. The successful separation of octadecatrienoic acids with 5c, 5t and 6c double bonds is shown by way of gas chromatograms of the fatty acid methyl esters obtained from the seed oils of four different species of the family Ranunculaceae and of Xeranthemum and Pinus.

Thus, from 21 fatty acids detected in the Thalictrum genus, 8 acids (99-106) are saturated (5-10%), 9 acids (107-115) are monoenes (12-49%), 2 acids (116,117) are dienes (22-27%) and 2 acids (118,119) are trienes (30-56%). The fatty acid composition of seed oils of all investigated species were shown to consist of about 50-60% fatty acids having double bonds in a trans-position.…”

Thalictrum is an important plant genus that is widely used in traditional medicine. In this review considerable attention has been given to triterpenoid saponins in connection with their specific distribution in the Thalictrum genus and with their biological activity. All other non-alkaloid compounds isolated from the Thalictrum genus are also reviewed; these metabolites are discussed in relation to their structural features and to their role in the plants.
