Fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis in mice infected with the tapewormHymenolepis microstoma

Abstract: Infection with Hymenolepis microstoma significantly affected the lipid metabolism of young male Balb/C mice. Infection increased the rates of hepatic fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis and cholesterol synthesis by the gut. Decreases were recorded in testicular fatty acid synthesis and in the weights of testes and white epididymal adipose tissue. Plasma glucose decreased rapidly during infection. The observed changes in lipogenesis could not be attributed to changes in food intake or body temperature. The cha… Show more

“…The liver protective reaction, as recorded in infected animals by this and other studies (Arakcheeva 1969, Rath andWalkey 1987), is directed at the intensification of its curative function. In the liver, all toxic products of parasite metabolism are neutralised (Arakcheeva 1969, Rath andWalkey 1987).…”

“…In the liver, all toxic products of parasite metabolism are neutralised (Arakcheeva 1969, Rath andWalkey 1987). In livers showing enhanced functional activity, increased numbers of binucleated hepatocytes and mitotic divisions (Rath and Walkey 1987;present study) are associated with activation of regeneration processes.…”
