Introduction: the multifactorial nature of motor development is reinforced by the combination of biological and environmental risk factors, which intensify the chances of impaired motor development. Objectives: to verify the relationship between functional mobility skills of children with risk factors and motor stimulus opportunities in their home environment. Methods: transversal study conducted with 112 patients aged 18-42 months from follow-up services. Motor stimulus opportunities were evaluated by the Affordance in the Home Environment for Motor Development (AHEMD-SR) and Functional mobility skills by the Pediatric Evaluation Disability Inventory (PEDI). Student t test and multiple linear regression analysis were carried out. Results: predominance of good performance of functional mobility skills and "average level" of environmental stimulus opportunities were observed. There was no significant association between HFM-PEDI and AHEMD-SR. The results showed significant association only between HFM-PEDI and presence of health problems (p = 0.004). Children with health problems had lower mean PEDI normative score. Multiple linear regression analysis showed significant result for health problems in the interaction among environment, control variables and HFM-PEDI (p = 0.003). Conclusion: there was no association between functional mobility skills of children with risk factors and motor stimulus opportunities in their home environment. On the other hand, children with some health problem showed lower performance in functional mobility skills.

RESUMOObjetivo: avaliar o desempenho motor em recém-nascidos pré-termo (RNPT) com risco para o desenvolvimento motor. Método: estudo prospectivo entre junho 2007 e dezembro 2008 com RN estáveis, respiração espontânea em ar ambiente e idade corrigida até 120 dias de vida. O estudo consistiu na avaliação do desempenho motor através do Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP), sendo aplicado por fisioterapeuta treinado, na alta hospitalar. A análise dos resultados foi realizada através de medidas descritivas e medidas de sensibilidade, especificidade e valores preditivos positivo e negativo. Resultados: Foram estudados 69 RNs com idade gestacional (IG) média 32,61 ± 2,69 semanas e peso médio 1207,00 ± 380,14 gramas, com predomínio do sexo masculino (62%) e dos adequados para a idade gestacional (66,6%). Da população estudada 56 RN apresentaram pontuação na média, 7 apresentaram pontuação abaixo da média e 6 apresentaram escores muito abaixo da média. Os RN com pontuação dentro da média apresentaram IG média 34,44 ± 0,59 sem, peso médio de nascimento 1355,50 ± 294,26 gramas e permaneceram em média 11,22 ± 7,07 dias em oxigênio inalatório. Os RN que obtiveram desempenho abaixo da média apresentaram IG média 32,00 ± 2,59 sem, peso médio de nascimento 1180,00 ± 334,16 gramas e permaneceram 8,20 ± 4,24 dias sob ventilação mecânica (VM); os RN com pontuação muito abaixo da média apresentaram IG média 28,76 ± 2,54 sem, peso de nascimento 830,00 ± 332,06 g e permaneceram em média 42,50 ± 18,93 dias em VM. Verificou-se 54,5% sensibilidade, 71,4% especificidade e valores preditivos positivo e negativo de 75% e 100%. Conclusão: Os RNPT que apresentaram pior desempenho motor foram os que permaneceram em suporte ventilatório prolongado.Palavras-chave: desenvolvimento motor; recém-nascido; prematuro. Objective: To assess the clinical and neurobehavioral variables for the development of preterm newborns. Method: This was a cross-sectional study with a sample of twenty-one preterm newborns of both genders and mean gestational and chronological ages of 32 weeks (± 1.7) and 27 days (± 15.2), respectively, who were assessed while still in hospital. The medical files were used to collect data on the gestation, delivery, complications developed and on the Neonatal Medical Index (NMI). The newborns were evaluated using the Neurobehavioral Assessment of the Preterm Infant (NAPI) in seven categories: scarf sign, motor development and vigor, popliteal angle, alertness and orientation, irritability, cry quality and percent asleep. The data were analyzed using SPSS ® statistical software based on descriptive statistics (frequencies, means and standard deviations), Student's t test for comparison of groups (study sample versus normative NAPI sample) and Spearman's correlation test (clinical variables and NAPI categories). Results: The preterm newborns' performance was statistically significantly different from the normative NAPI group in relation to the variables of scarf sign, motor development and vigor and cry quality. The NMI correlated negatively with scarf sign (r= -0.60). Alert behavioral state during inactivity correlated positively with motor development and vigor (r= 0.59) and with cry quality (r= 0.71). The most frequent maternal complications were genitourinary tract infection (47%) and gestational arterial hypertension (24%), and the neonatal complications were hyaline membrane syndrome (86%), neonatal infection (57%) and hyperbilirubinemia (47%). Conclusion: Neurobehavioral assessment and clinical data are variables that must be considered when working with newborns at risk of delayed development.
