Fatores associados à anemia em crianças e adolescentes de escolas públicas de Salvador, Bahia, Brasil

Abstract: This study aimed to assess factors associated with anemia in schoolchildren. All subjects (N = 1,013; age 7-14 yrs.) p = 0.020 and OR < 50% adequacy = 1.68; p = 0.016) and family income below 1 minimum wage (OR = 1, 42; p = 0.035). Anemia prevalence in children and adolescents was high, especially among the poorest subjects and those with low intake of bioavailable iron.

“…The lack of association between Hb concentrations and socio-economic level is in line with the study of Farias et al 26 , that demonstrated the relationship between family per capita income and the prevalence of anemia, since it is expected that the level of income may influence the quantity and quality of the consumption of ironrich foods 27 .…”

“…Other limiting factors were, on the one hand, the lack of data on the dietary iron intake of students and, on the other, the adoption of a cross-sectional methodological design that allowed only the observation of associations between the events studied, without being possible to demonstrate a cause and effect relationship between these events 27 .…”

“…The relevance of income level in the determination of anemia seems to derive from its effect on the quantity and quality of food, on the consumption of foods that are sources of heme iron, on the access to healthcare services and on the quality of housing and sanitation. 4 Although the variable maternal age lost its strength of association in the regression analysis, children whose mothers were younger than 20 years were more susceptible to anemia. Similar fi ndings from other studies 10,13,20 lead us to suppose that these mothers' lack of maturity and knowledge infl uence the inadequate choice of complementary foods.…”
