Fatigue behaviour of aluminium matrix composites reinforced with continuous alumina fibres

Abstract: Alumina (N610) reinforced pure Al (A9) or Al ± 2 wt-%Cu alloy (AU2) unidirectional (UD) composites which combine a highly ductile matrix with a strong interface bonding, present high static and dynamic mechanical performances. In the present paper, the fatigue behaviour of quasi-UD N610zA9 and N610zAU2 composites is investigated. Notwithstanding the presence of the transverse bundles, the longitudinal behaviour in tension and fatigue of these quasi-UD composites is nearly equivalent to that of the pure UD. Onl… Show more

“…On the contrary, using a quasi-UD woven fabric preform with 90 pct fibers in the longitudinal direction and 10 pct fibers in the transverse direction prevents fiber movements during metal infiltration, improves the transverse mechanical properties, and nearly maintains the longitudinal performances. [9,10] A detailed investigation of the thermomechanical behavior and properties of these quasi-UD composites is reported in the preceding article (Part I, [11] ). However, completely reinforced mechanical parts designed for aerospace applications necessitate a more isotropic behavior.…”

“…[2] In this context, knowledge of the specific behavior and of the damage mechanisms of the quasi-UD composites is a prerequisite to the further investigation of the mechanical properties of the quasi-UD (0, Ϯ45, 90 deg) laminates. Although the study of the mechanical properties and damage mechanisms of the quasi-UD composites represents a broader investigation involving acoustic emission monitoring, [10,11] only those of the results that are essential in the understanding of the specific behavior of this type of composite are reported in the present article (Part I). The next article (Part II [12] ) will be devoted to the quasi-UD (0, Ϯ45, 90 deg) laminates.…”

“…Quasiunidirectional (quasi-UD) composites reinforced by a woven fabric preform with 90 pct fibers in the longitudinal direction and 10 pct fibers in the transverse direction constitute an efficient alternative to the UD composites, since the quasi-UD preform prevents fiber movements during infiltration and improves the transverse mechanical properties, whereas it nearly maintains the longitudinal performances. [10,11] Completely reinforced mechanical parts, which generally necessitate a less anisotropic behavior, may be manufactured from cross-ply laminates consisting in the stacking of such quasi-UD preforms oriented at 0, Ϯ45, 90 deg. [2] In this context, knowledge of the specific behavior and of the damage mechanisms of the quasi-UD composites is a prerequisite to the further investigation of the mechanical properties of the quasi-UD (0, Ϯ45, 90 deg) laminates.…”
