Effects of electric fields on magnetization of ferromagnetic Ni films grown on a Cu(001) single crystal covered with antiferromagnetic NiO overlayer are investigated by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). The growth of the NiO overlayer on the Ni film is confirmed by XAS, and it is revealed by XMCD and MOKE that the NiO/Ni films show a spin reorientation transition from in-plane to perpendicular magnetization with increasing Ni thickness. It is also observed that the coercive field of the Ni films increases as the NiO thickness increases, possibly due to the interaction with antiferromagnetic NiO. Remanent magnetization of the Ni film is found to be modified by the application of electric fields. The possible origin of the electric-field effects is discussed, and some change in magnetic anisotropy of the Ni film is suggested.

A scheme for achieving faster polarization switching is to use twin undulators with kicker magnets (Hara et al, 1998(Hara et al, , 2003Muro et al, 2005;Sawhney et al, 1997;Amemiya et al, 2013); two undulators with different polarizations are placed in tandem, and one of them is selected to emit SR by modulating an electron orbit using kicker magnets. The frequency of polarization switching is typically less than $ 10 Hz.…”

A new soft X-ray beamline, BL07LSU, has been constructed at SPring-8 to perform advanced soft X-ray spectroscopy for materials science. The beamline is designed to achieve high energy resolution (E/ÁE> 10000) and high photon flux [>10 12 photons s À1 (0.01% bandwidth) À1 ] in the photon energy range 250-2000 eV with controllable polarization. To realise this state-of-the-art performance, a novel segmented cross undulator was developed and adopted as a light source. The details of the undulator light source and beamline monochromator design are described. The achieved performance of the beamline, such as the photon flux, energy resolution and the state of polarization, is reported.

The charge disproportionation of Mn 3d and O 2p electronic states was investigated in two (LaMnO3)2(SrMnO3)2 superlattices using the resonant x-ray scattering technique. The superlattices show significantly different conductivity even though the same composition. The large modulation of the Mn 3d electronic state was observed in the insulating sample, however the charge disproportionation and magnetic modulation of O 2p were shown in the semiconductive sample. It is suggested that the charge modulation appears in either Mn 3d or O 2p, which is strongly related with strength of the p-d hybridization, is the main factor determining the electric conductivity in the superlattices.
