Fast itch relief in an experimental model for methylprednisolone aceponate topical corticosteroid activity, based on allergic contact eczema to nickel sulphate

Abstract: We present a valid model to assess the efficacy and speed of action of TC treatment to alleviate pruritus and the signs of eczema. The fast effect of MPA against pruritus supports the appropriateness of treating allergic contact eczema with TC.

“…Pruritus experimentally induced by histamine was significantly suppressed by topical hydrocortisone when compared to placebo (201). In another experimental model itch relief from nickel allergy provided by methylprednisolone aceponate was very rapid and preceded resolution of all other eczema findings, suggesting a direct antipruritic effect of the agent rather than just an indirect anti-inflammatory one (202).…”

“…Itching at the site of application of the patches is commonly observed; it can either be attributable to a positive patch test reaction, or be a result of tape irritation. However, some patients experience more itching immediately after removal of the tape . Various subjective complaints of patch tested patients have occasionally been reported in the literature .…”

“…The quantification of biophysical parameters, such as TEWL, stratum corneum (SC) hydration, and skin surface pH, is necessary for the complete evaluation of the epidermal barrier status (Darlenski et al, 2009). Skin erythema and temperature measurement have been used as noninvasive ways to investigate inflammation (Curto et al, 2014, Kwon et al, 2014). Also, a strong association has been shown between ultrasound and pathological findings in other inflammatory skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis (Polańska et al, 2013a, Polańska et al, 2013b).…”
