Fast accessing Web3D contents using lightweight progressive meshes

Abstract: Accessing Web3D contents is relatively slow through Internet under limited bandwidth. Preprocessing of 3D models can certainly alleviate the problem, such as 3D compression and progressive meshes (PM). But none of them considers the similarity between components of a 3D model, so that we could take advantage of this to further improve the efficiency. This paper proposes a similarity-aware data reduction method together with PM, called lightweight progressive meshes (LPM). LPM aims to excavate similar component… Show more

“…In lightweight transmission of 3D models in Web3D L.Wen. et al [4] presented a progressive mesh together with a lightweight method which removes similar or repetitive components in the shape to decrease the file size of the 3D model. Huang et al [5] proposed the mesh collapse method for the lightweight transform of the aortic vasculum to reduce the number of faces and vertices of the whole mesh.…”

“…For browsers, Kai designed and implemented a 3D mesh model transmission technique using streaming compression on the Web through JavaScript and WebGL [18]. By using the similarity of 3D models, the data reduction method of component similarity in the model is performed, and all the processed data are organized using the structure of the lightweight scene graph to increase the efficiency of the model transmission and loading process [19]. For network transmission, a new container file format is proposed to address the shortcomings of HTTP request data.…”
