Farrowing behaviour and stillbirth in two environments: An evaluation of the restraint-stillbirth hypothesis

Abstract: A total of 59 farrowings were studied in either a conventional, narrow farrowing crate (0.43 m wide) or a much wider alternative design with sides spaced 1.2 m apart at the sow's standing height but narrowing near the floor to limit the sow's lying area. Using video recording, we monitored each "birth interval" (i.e. the period between two successive births) and noted the interval's length, the sow's posture and postural changes during the interval, and whether the interval ended with a live-born or stillborn … Show more

“…Effect of 2 h prepartum behaviour on parturition parameters In contrast to Fraser et al (1997), we did find associations between 2 h prepartum behaviour and parturition parameters. Interestingly, regardless of the parity, the diminished occurrence of stillborn was associated with increased posture changes (INOUT, parity 1), with less lying (OUTOUT, parity 2) and with increased sternal lying (OUTOUT, parity 2) during the last 2 h prepartum.…”

“…The probability of stillbirth was shown to increase with litter size, sow parity and farrowing duration (Fraser et al, 1997;Leenhouwers et al, 1999;Canario et al, 2006;Quesnel et al, 2008). .…”

“…In addition, crating of the sow during farrowing can cause prolonged -E-mail: cfh@sund.ku.dk farrowing, as sows in crates have lower oxytocin levels in the blood (Verhovsek et al, 2007;Oliviero et al, 2010). Several authors have reported a correlation between prolonged farrowings and increase in stillborn piglets (Fraser et al, 1997;Borges et al, 2005;Canario et al, 2006), and indeed Cronin et al (1996) and Oliviero et al (2010) observed more stillborn piglets among sows in farrowing crates compared with sows that were loose during farrowing. On the other hand, Cronin et al (2000), Weber et al (2007) and Pedersen et al (2011) failed to detect such a difference.…”
