Farnesol Anti-biofilm Activity against Candida albicans Reference and Mutant Strains

Abstract: Introduction: Farnesol is known as a quorum sensing (QS) molecule that has a role as an antibiofilm agent. It is produced by C. albicans and blocks the morphological transition from yeasts to hyphae. The hyphal development is important for the formation of substantial biofilm biomass. Mutant strains lacking the filamentation genes EFG1 and TEC1 are less virulent than their reference strains. Aims: To determine the role of the transcription factors EFG1 and TEC1 by using knockout strains

“…The biosynthesis of exopolysaccharides is accompanied by a decrease in metabolic activity and the transformation of microbial populations to an “uncultivated condition” [ 14 ]. The morphofunctional stability of C. albicans biofilms is based on yeast and hyphal forms, and the process of seedling formation ensures the development of the intercellular matrices [ 15 ].…”

“…C. albicans has been detected more frequently in the oral cavities of children with ECC than in children without caries [1,17,18]. C. albicans and Streptococcus mutans are found together and interact within the conducive conditions of ECC [19].…”

“…To respond the changes in the biofilm environmental conditions after exposure to ethanol extract of propolis, it is necessary to examine the biomolecular level, including the QS molecule. Farnesol is a QS molecule that acts as an anti-biofilm agent [10,18]. It is produced by C. albicans and blocks the morphological transition from yeast to hyphae [10,18].…”
