Each year, tens of thousands of Latino migrant farmworkers return to the hills and fields of North Carolina to live in employer-provided labor camps that often fail to meet regulatory and ethical standards. Little attention has been paid to how these workers and their families perceive and respond to substandard housing conditions. This paper analyzes how far and in what ways Latino migrant farmworkers living in eastern North Carolina labor camps feel their agency extends in responding to substandard housing and work conditions, while also considering who among them has the power to exercise this agency. Based on qualitative analysis of interviews with twenty-three migrant farmworkers or partners of farmworkers, our findings indicate that the limits of migrant farmworker agency are strongly dictated by the close relationship between migrant farmworker employment and housing; by the importance of remittance wages for dependents; and by individual immigration, gender, and education characteristics. In the current context, the informal and reparative nature of agentive acts in substandard labor camps creates real but minor improvements while also co-constructing the very structural neglect to which it responds. We conclude that current housing and labor policy frameworks do little to amplify and support differentially distributed migrant farmworker agency and its individualized successes.

Although much research has examined the occupational health and safety (OHS) and workers’ compensation (WC) implications of precarious employment and temporary international labor migration, little is known about the implications of diverse types of employment-related geographic mobility for regulatory effectiveness of OHS and WC. This article examines different types of extended mobility to determine regulatory effectiveness of OHS and WC protections. Based on classic legal analysis in seven Canadian jurisdictions, and interviews with key informants, we found that the invisibility of the internally mobile workforce, as well as the alternating visibility and invisibility of temporary foreign workers, contribute to reduced effectiveness of the OHS and WC regulation. Results point to the need for better protections to address working conditions, but also the hazards and challenges associated with mobility itself including getting to and from work, living at work, and maintaining work–life balance while living at the worksite.

This study was conducted to measure the level of happiness of smallholder layer-chicken farmers in rural East Java based on the subjective well-being conditions. The study was conducted in April 2019 with a survey method in the Malang Regency of East Java Province. Analysis units were 109 (20%) smallholder layer chicken households purposively selected from 543 poultry farmers. Data collection was carried out through interviews using structured questionnaires and assistive tools of scoring on questions related to the dimensions of life satisfaction, affect, and eudaimonia that represent the ladder of life scale on a scale of 0 to 10. The three dimensions were divided into 19 indicators and used to calculate the Happiness Index. Smallholder layer chicken farmers said that they were "Satisfied" with 8 indicators and "Completely Satisfied" with 2 indicators of Life Satisfaction Dimension, and produced a Life Satisfaction Index of 7.40 (Happy). Farmers said that they were "Satisfied" with the 3 indicators of Affection Dimension and produced the Affection Index of 6.64 (Happy). Farmers said that they were "satisfied" with 6 indicators of Eudaimonia Dimension and produced the Eudaimonia Index of 7.74 (Happy). It can be concluded that the Happiness Index of smallholder layer chicken farmers in rural areas of East Java Province was 7.28 and classified as "Happy".
