“…Because the growth rates obtained at the three study locations were above 3.5%, which is considered to be adequate for commercial farming (Parker 1974; Braud & Perez 1978; Liu & Zhuang 1984; Adnan & Porse 1987; Luxton et al . 1987; Ask & Azanza 2002), commercial cultivation is feasible and may be taken up either by NGOs or Self Help Groups to facilitate development of the rural coastal areas on the one hand and to improve the living standards of the coastal rural people on the other.…”

Current sources of cultivated eucheumatoids seem incapable of meeting its growing market demand of carrageenan (Ask & Azanza 2002), and in order to meet the demand the cultivation of Kappaphycus species has expanded to other regions of Philippines and also to other countries like Japan and Indonesia (Adnan & Porse 1987; Luxton 1993), Tanzania (Lirasan & Twide 1993), Kiripati (Luxton & Luxton 1999), Fiji (Luxton, Robertson & Kindley 1987), Hawaii (Glenn & Doty 1990) and South Africa (Braud & Perez 1978; Lirasan & Twide 1993). Experimental cultivation of this seaweed has been accomplished successfully in Madagascar (Mollion & Braud 1993), Vietnam (Ohno, Nang & Hirase 1996) and China (Qian, Wu, Wu & Xie 1996).…”
