Farmer adoption and intensity of use of extreme weather adaptation and mitigation strategies: evidence from a sample of Missouri farmers

Abstract: Climate change and its associated weather extremes pose a threat to agriculture. To slow down climate change and reduce its associated risks, governments around the world are currently developing policies to encourage farmers to engage in adaptation and mitigation efforts. The aim of this study is to assess the adoption and intensity of use of extreme weather adaptation and mitigation strategies among a sample of Missouri farmers and to identify the factors that influence adaptation and mitigation behavior. Of… Show more

“…Validation through focus group discussions, as proposed by Sinha et al (2022), could be the starting point for policy co-design. Likewise, it would enable complete control for unchanging hidden differences, lack cultural factors or the neighbourhood effect that may influence adaptation behaviour (Skevas et al 2022).…”

“…zero revenue), we address the possibility of selection bias with a panel double hurdle model. Within the field of farm and food economics, the double hurdle model has been used to explain such events as organic produce consumption (Zhang et al., 2008), fertilizer demand (Ricker‐Gilbert et al., 2011), chickpea production (Tabe‐Ojong et al., 2022), and farmland flood prevention adoption (Skevas et al., 2022). In our scenario, the first hurdle is represented by the probability of commercial activity (i.e.…”

“…The outcome variable of our study is the annual revenue recorded by the farmer cooperatives in Romanian Leu (RON). Although farmer cooperatives are not necessarily profit maximizers (Soboh et al, 2009;Benos et al, 2018), revenue and profit generation at the firm-level is still a necessary condition in order to facilitate member returns in the form of prices, equity revolvements, and patronage refunds (i.e. dividends).…”

“…Floods negatively affect the agricultural sector through reduced yields, increased costs of production and high investment costs. Higher operational costs coupled with weak infrastructure weaken the rural household's ability to cope with these risks subjecting them to flood-induced poverty [2,3]. This makes it paramount for policymakers, development agents, leaders, and the entire society to have the know-how, the processes, and the ways in which to accelerate adaptation.…”

“…Successful implementation of perceived measures is highly determined by how households perceive and embrace them. Research shows that households are more likely to adapt by adopting on-farm and nonfarm strategies [2][3][4] to overcome the impacts of climate change while reducing the associated risks. The impacts of climate change are being experienced at an unprecedented rate globally with the World Meteorological Centre projecting that global temperatures and carbon accumulation are still on the rise [5,6].…”
