Social Support for Breastfeeding Practice During the COVID-19 Second Wave in Thailand: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Since December 2020, the second wave of COVID-19 in Thailand has had a considerable impact, and mothers have struggled to receive breastfeeding support in hospitals. In this situation, there has been limited research that addresses social support for breastfeeding and the influences of support in determining breastfeeding outcomes. Research Aims: (1) To describe the influence of COVID-19 on social support for breastfeeding and breastfeeding practices in the Thai context, and (2) to examine breastfeeding duration with different levels of social support from families and healthcare providers. Method: This descriptive, cross-sectional online survey design was part of a larger multi-methods project about breastfeeding behaviors and experiences among postpartum mothers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online questionnaires were administered from August to November 2021 to participants ( N = 390) who were from three provinces in Thailand and had given birth 6–12 months prior to the survey. Results: Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months was observed in less than half of the participants ( n = 146, 37.4%). Perceptions of breastfeeding support were generally high overall among both family (Mdn = 45, IQR = 7) and healthcare providers (Mdn = 43, IQR = 7). Participants who perceived more breastfeeding support from families than the median had significantly longer exclusive breastfeeding durations than those who perceived less breastfeeding support than the median ( z = −2.246, p = .025). The same pattern was present for breastfeeding support from healthcare providers ( z = −2.380, p = 0.017). Conclusions: While the exclusive breastfeeding rate was better than the pre-pandemic rate, successful breastfeeding was more common when participants perceived that they had received breastfeeding support. Policymakers should execute breastfeeding support systems along with COVID-19 management.

Kanker serviks merupakan salah satu penyakit reproduksi wanita dengan angka kematian yang tinggi. Salah satu upaya untuk menekan terjadinya kanker serviks yaitu dengan program inspeksi visual asam asetat (IVA) tes. Penggunaan media layanan website berbasis edukasi “Sayang Wanita” pada era ini akan memudahkan penyebaran informasi dan pengetahuan seseorang. Website ini bisa diakses melalui smartphone untuk memudahkan pengguna sehingga menimbulkan kesadaran dan akhirnya akan merubah perilaku WUS. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan layanan website berbasis edukasi “Sayang Wanita” dalam meningkatkan perilaku WUS untuk melakukan pemeriksaan IVA. Desain penelitian ini quasi exsperimental design dengan rancangan posttest control group design. Penelitian ini melibatkan 44 responden yang terbagi dalam kelompok perlakuan (n=22) dan kelompok kontrol (n=22). Perilaku WUS dalam melakukan pemeriksaan IVA diukur sesudah diberikan intervesi selama 4 minggu. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan perilaku WUS pada kelompok perlakuan sebesar 86,9% datang untuk melakukan pemeriksaan IVA, sedangkan pada kelompok kontrol sebagian besar 95,5% tidak datang untuk melakukan pemeriksaan IVA. Terdapat perbedaan antara kelompok perlakuan dan kelompok kontrol dengan Uji Independent T-Test nilai p value 0,001 artinya terdapat pengaruh penggunaan layanan website berbasis edukasi “Sayang Wanita” terhadap perilaku WUS untuk melakukan pemeriksaan IVA. Media informasi melalui website “Sayang Wanita” ini dapat meningkatkan perilaku kesehatan. Cervical cancer is one of the reproductive diseases with a large number of deaths. One of the effort to decrease the cervical cancer problem is by IVA test. The media of website service use of “Sayang Wanita” education based is to facilitate the information spread and someone’s knowledge. The website can be accessed from a smartphone to facilitate the users which raise their awareness and eventually change the woman of childbearing age’s behavior. This research is aimed to discover the influence of website service use of “Sayang Wanita” education based to enhance the woman of childbearing age’s behaviour for conducting IVA test. This research method was quasi-experimental design with post-test control group design. This research implicated 44 respondents which divided into treatment groups (n=22) and control groups (n=22). The woman of childbearing age’s behavior in conducting IVA test was measured after given intervention 4 weeks. The research results showed the women of childbearing age’s behavior at 86% treatment group came to have IVA test, while the control group most of the 95,5% did not come to have IVA test. There was a significantly difference between treatment group and control group analysed by Independent T-Test (p value 0,001). It means there is an influence of website use service of “Sayang Wanita” education based toward woman of childbearing age’s behavior to conduct IVA test. Media information IVA “Sayang Wanita” website is able to change the human’s behavior in improving the health behavior and providing an alternative media for public education.

Background: Failure to feed babies is a choking-like problem often found in the community. Lactation management needs to be given to ensure successful implementation and provide better nutrition. The aim of this study is to analyzed the role of the family to preventing choking in children with supplementary feeding approach Methods: The research design is descriptive. The population was the familys with children with incidental sampling techniques. The research sample ware 44 respondents. Variables are the role of the family to preventing choking. Use Google Forms to survey data about mother-child cooperation with questions are Start Feeding as Early as Possible, Cooperation between mother and child, Role of family members, Feeding Schedule, and Eating Habits Result: The results of this study found that as far as the factors affecting eating are concerned, the index of starting eating as early as possible is 86.4%, and the index of mother-infant cooperation has an adequate impact on eating 50%. The index of the role of fathers and other family members shows that 84.1% of people are enough to influence eating. The indicators found no difficulty in determining the feeding schedule. It was found that the proportion that affected eating was 84.1%, while the eating habits indicators found that the proportion that affected eating was 84.1%. Conclusion: It is very important to provide anti-choking management when providing extra food, in the hope that there is no obstacle when providing extra food and satisfying children’s nutrition
