ObjectiveTo determine the modifiable factors influencing well-being in boys and girls by accounting for deprivation, ethnicity and clustering within local authorities.MethodsWe used data from a very large nationally representative survey, the What About Youth study involving 120 115 adolescents aged 15 years. Our outcome measure of mental well-being was the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS). Potential explanatory factors included substance abuse, screen time, eating habits, reading, bullying, sleeping pattern, physical activity and area-level deprivation. We ran unadjusted and adjusted multilevel models for each explanatory factor, after adjusting for ethnicity, deprivation and including a random effect for the local authority.ResultsBoys had a higher overall mean WEMWBS score than girls (p<0.0001). In the adjusted model, each of multiple risk behaviours, eating habits, sleep, bullying, physical activity, screen-time and reading were independently associated with mental well-being in both boy and girls (p<0.0001 for both). Sleep and eating behaviours had a stronger association in both sexes than bullying, physical activity and screen time. Young people from black ethnic groups had significantly higher well-being in both sexes. Deprivation was not associated with well-being among boys but was among girls.ConclusionThe largest contributors to adolescent well-being appear to be sleep, eating behaviours and bullying when considered in a multivariable framework. While adolescents from black ethnic groups had higher overall well-being scores, area deprivation did not affect male well-being but had a small effect on female well-being. Future longitudinal studies and health policies need to consider a range of behavioural factors to drive improvements in adolescent well-being.

Life quality of 9-11 year-old children: Family functionality and demographic variables

In this study, the relationship between the quality of life levels of children aged 9-11 and their perception of family functions and some demographic characteristics was investigated. The sample of the study included six primary schools and six secondary schools in the central districts of a metropolitan city located in the west of Turkey in the 2017-2018 academic year. Participants were 783 children, 396 girls and 387 boys. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the data collected by using the General Quality of Life Scale for Children and Family Relationship Scale for Children. The results of the analysis showed that supportive and discouraging family relationships scores significantly predicted the quality of life of the children and explained 35.80% of change in their quality of life. In addition, the predictive power of supporting family relationships (28.70%) was significantly higher than that of the discouraging family relationships (-7.10%) in explaining children’s quality of life. Gender, age and number of siblings were not significantly correlated with life quality of children.

Domestic violence, separation and divorce are becoming increasingly common and leaving psychological traumas that are not easily healed for family members, especially for children in Vietnamese incomplete family. In this article, we identify the factors affecting the psychological trauma of children in the incomplete families by using Achenbach T. M's Children Behavior Checklist (CBCL). We design 2 experiments and 3 steps to filter the main factor affected the psychological trauma of children living in incomplete families. In results, we found out that up to 46.42% of children had psychological traumas when living in incomplete family with an extremely high level of 8.16% and an average of 57.14%. The results showed not only by living in incomplete family but also other factors such as the pressure from public opinion and community affected the children psychological trauma. It is necessary to minimize the effect of psychological trauma of children in Vietnamese families.
