Background: Depression is commonly encountered in elderly population. The symptoms associated with depression are likely to be dismissed as 'normal' by self as well as family caregivers. Other than organic causes, social factors play a significant role in development of depression. In many primary care settings, patients presenting with depression often do not get diagnosed. Objectives: To assess the burden of depression and its association with socio demographic predictors among elderly population in a selected urban community in Puducherry. Material and Methods: A community based cross sectional study was conducted among 150 randomly selected elderly persons in the urban service areas of a medical college. Socio demographic details, activities of daily living, family care and social interaction particulars were collected. Geriatric Depression Scale-15 screening questionnaire was used to assess depression. Results: The mean age of the participants was 69.8+7.2 years. Two-thirds participants (70.3%) reported good family care. About half (52.4%) of the participants had good social interaction and 38.6% had depression. More women (48.6%) reported depression than men (28.2%). Female gender, living alone, poor family care, dependency in activities of daily living, perceived burden and less social interaction were significantly (p<0.05) associated with depression. Conclusion: Community screening of elderly for depression can be a made a routine practice in primary health care settings. Risk factors could be identified and alleviated to improve the quality of life of the elderly.

Background: Depression in elderly is widespread, often undiagnosed, and usually untreated.Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between personality, family support, and depression in elderly in the Home Care Center of Tresna Wedha Minaula Kendari.Methods: This was a correlational cross-sectional study conducted in 2015. The population in this study is all elderly people in the Home Care Center of Tresna Wedha Minaula Kendari as many as 90 persons. Of the total population, 41 samples were selected using purposive sampling. Data data were analyzed using frequency distribution and chi square test. Results: There were significant associations between personality type (p = 0.019), family support (p = 0.047), and depression in elderly persons. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between personality type, family support, and depression in the elderly in the Home Care Center of Tresna Wedha Minaula Kendari. It is important to understand how the roles of personalities and family support from each family member contributes to depression.

Introduction: Depression is considered as a disorder that students have a susceptible environment for it and is affected by many factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the role of satisfaction of basic psychological needs and family functioning by interdisciplinary role of emotion regulation difficulty in the prediction of depression. Methods: The method used in the study is descriptive approach by structural equation modeling. The sample consisted of 452 (207 boys and 245 girls) students universities Tabriz who were selected using multistage cluster sampling. Then, they filled out depression Questionnaire, satisfaction of basic psychological needs, family Assessment Device and Difficulties in Emotional Regulation Scale. Data were analyzed by using Pearson correlation coefficient, cronbach alpha and structural equation modeling. Results: The results of the study showed that the goodness of fit index (GFI), adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI), comparative fit index (CFI), is greater than 0.90 and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), and root mean square residual (RMR) index is less than 0.05. Therefore, the proposed model has had a very suitable fitness with data. In this study, the most direct effect is the satisfaction of basic psychological needs on depression with a coefficient of-0.38 and satisfaction of basic psychological needs has the most indirect effect through emotion regulation difficulty on depression with a coefficient of-0.12. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that Difficulties in Emotional Regulation As a Mediator of the Relationship between satisfaction of basic psychological needs and family function can explain depression in College Students and, thereby, attention to this matter can lead to the proposal of some recommendations for depression in College Students prevention and treatment.
