Background: Shared reading has many benefits to children’s language and literacy development. The practice of shared reading varies widely among different cultural groups and is influenced by sociocultural factors. Promotion of shared reading in the healthcare setting has been shown to be effective in many western countries. Very little data are available from other nations, particularly those in the Middle East about parental experiences and attitudes towards shared reading with children. The aim of this study was to explore sociocultural factors that influence shared reading with children in Jordan, a low-middle income Arabic speaking country. Methods: We used survey methodology to collect information on shared reading from a sample of parents of children 3-8 years of age presenting to the Jordan University Hospital Pediatrics clinic in Amman, Jordan. Data were also gathered through solicitation of narrative unstructured comments from parents. Qualitative and statistical data analysis were performed. Findings: Mothers universally believed that shared reading is beneficial for children. However, only a small minority (16.4%) reported reading to their children daily. Shared reading behaviors correlated with frequency of mothers’ personal reading and with the number of books in the home. Mothers indicated a preference for culturally appropriate books, written in classical Arabic and books having a moral or a lesson. Barriers to shared reading included a perceived lack of encouragement of this practice from society and schools and lack of access to books and public libraries.Discussion: Promotion of shared reading is an effective way to enhance the literacy of children from varying ethnic and cultural backgrounds and represents an opportunity to reduce health disparities worldwide. Understanding regional sociocultural dynamics is an essential factor in planning successful interventions to promote literacy. We identified barriers to reading as well as cultural values that may be leveraged to enhance shared reading in Jordan.

Background: The present qualitative study assessed the need, acceptability and appropriateness for implementing effective and culturally appropriate smoking prevention programs for adolescents in schools in Indonesia. Methods: Snowball sampling was used to recruit participants. The study sample comprised a mixture of staff in the education department, junior high school teachers and individuals who had taught junior high school students in Aceh Province, Indonesia. Data were collected through one hour in-depth face to face or telephone interviews and analyzed using a descriptive content analysis procedure. Results: School teachers and policy makers in education firmly supported the implementation of a school-based smoking prevention program in Aceh. An appropriate intervention for smoking prevention program in schools in Aceh should involve both health and Islamic based approaches, and be provided by teachers and external providers. Potential barriers to the program included smoker teachers and parents, time constraints of students and/or teachers, lack of teachers' ability, increase in students' load, the availability of tobacco advertising and sales, and lack of tobacco regulation and support from community and related departments. To increase program effectiveness, involvement of and coordination with other relevant parties are needed. Conclusions: The important stakeholders in Indonesian childhood education agreed that school-based smoking prevention program would be appropriate for junior high school students. An appropriate intervention for smoking prevention program for adolescents in schools in Indonesia should be appropriate to participants' background and involve all relevant parties.

Ένας από τους βασικότερους στόχους του αναλυτικού προγράμματος του νηπιαγωγείου είναι και η καλλιέργεια του λόγου (προφορικού και γραπτού) καθώς και η επαφή του παιδιού με τη λογοτεχνία. Το παραμύθι λοιπόν είναι το πιο αρεστό λογοτεχνικό είδος για τα παιδιά προσχολικής ηλικίας. Στα πλαίσια της διαθεματικής και πολυαισθητηριακής προσέγγισης στο νηπιαγωγείο επιλέξαμε να επεξεργαστούμε κυρίως κλασσικά και παραδοσιακά παραμύθια, ενισχύοντας με παιγνιώδη τρόπο την γλωσσική ανάπτυξη. Αναπτύχθηκαν λοιπόν δραστηριότητες που βελτιώνουν την πολυσύνθετη λειτουργία της αντίληψης, κεντρίζουν το ενδιαφέρον του παιδιού, επιτρέποντάς του ταυτόχρονα και με τη χρήση των ΤΠΕ να αναδείξει πλήρως όλες τις ικανότητες του γνωστικές, γλωσσικές- αφηγηματικές, αντιληπτικές, κιναισθητηκές. Σύμφωνα, με το ψυχαναλυτικό μοντέλο προσέγγισης, τα παραμύθια μεταφέρουν σημαντικά μηνύματα στο συνειδητό, στο προσυνειδητό και στο ασυνείδητο. (1) Με απλά λόγια, το παραμύθι παίρνει πολύ σοβαρά τα υπαρξιακά άγχη και βοηθά στο να εξομαλυνθούν και να ομαλοποιηθούν, ενώ ταυτόχρονα αποτελεί άριστο ψυχοπαιδαγωγικό μέσο διδασκαλίας. Το παραμύθι έχει μια ρομαντική και συγκινησιακή γοητεία, ασχολείται με τις εμπειρίες και τη ζωή ενός ατόμου κάθε φορά , που διαθέτει τέτοια χαρακτηριστικά ώστε να μπορεί να ταυτιστεί με τον αναγνώστη και να τον κάνει να φτάσει στην ψυχική κορύφωση και να συγκινηθεί. (2) Το ευτυχισμένο τέλος στην ιστορία δίνει στο παιδί-ακροατή ή αναγνώστη ένα ευχάριστο και ικανοποιητικό συναίσθημα, πώς δηλ. όλη η δράση κινείται σε ευτυχισμένη ατμόσφαιρα. Στην παρούσα εργασία συμμετείχαν 25 νήπια. Τα παιδιά αυτά προέρχονταν από διάφορα πολυπολιτισμικά και από διαφορετικά κοινωνικο-οικονομικά στρώματα.Στην εργασία αυτή, αξιοποιήσαμε σε υψηλό βαθμό τις δυνατότητες που προσφέρουν οι νέες τεχνολογίες σε συνδυασμό με την καλλιέργεια της φιλαναγνωσίας, καθώς είναι γενικά παραδεκτό ότι η χρήση ΤΠΕ συμβάλλει σημαντικά σε όλη την εκπαιδευτική διαδικασία. Συγκεκριμένα, προάγει τη γνώση, τη συνεργατική μάθηση, τη δημιουργικότητα, και βελτιώνει τις μεθόδους διδασκαλίας, οι οποίες αξιοποιούμενες ως εκπαιδευτικά εργαλεία καθιστούν τον μαθητή ικανό να ανταποκρίνεται με εύκολη προσπελασιμότητα στις δυσκολίες.
