Failure of compression-loaded multidirectional composite laminates

Abstract: An analytical and experimental investigation of the failure of selected compression-loaded [ ± 0/ T 0]6* composite laminates is described. A general nonlinear theory is presented for predicting a laminate's compressive strength and failure mode. The theory includes the effects of out-of-plane ply waviness, in-plane fiber waviness, and fiber scissoring. A simple compressive test technique is used to obtain the experimental data. The analytical and experimental results show good agreement for 0<45 deg and show e… Show more

“…Initial fibre misalignment angles have been reported to be smaller in the through-the-thickness direction [25], but more recent results suggest they can be similar in magnitude [26]. The present model assumes that the initial fibre misalignment is equal in magnitude in the transverse direction, through the thickness direction, or in any direction between the two.…”

“…These issues are covered in detail in [9, Volume III]. 9) from other publications, and case 10, a ± θ layup case of AS4/3502 material reported by [10,11]. Failure of a laminate comprised of unidirectional or [±θ] layups occurs at first ply failure.…”

“…The second failure predictions were made for AS4/3502 angle-ply composites loaded under compression. Experimental data was obtained from [6]. The critical dilatational invariant value for the stress invariant criteria was obtained from a transverse tension test.…”
