Faecal detection of the lungworms Crenosoma vulpis and Angiostrongylus vasorum and serological detection of A. vasorum in dogs from the Czech Republic

Abstract: Dogs are definitive hosts for the lungworms Crenosoma vulpis and Angiostrongylus vasorum.Intermediate hosts are gasteropoda (Mollusca). In the past, lungworms in dogs were rarely identified in the Czech Republic and in neighbouring countries. A total of 253 dogs were sampled for faecal analysis performed by the Baermann method for isolation of first stage larvae (L1) of lungworms. A total of 193 serum samples were collected and analysed by ELISA for the detection of a circulating antigen and specific antibodie… Show more

“…The parasites pathogenic for dogs without zoonotic potential were also diagnosed in investigated dogs. Lungworms Angiostrongylus vasorum (1.7%) and Crenosoma vulpis (0.9%) were detected by larvoscopy testing, similar results were obtained in 2017 [25]. As lungworms in the dogs were rarely identi ed in the Czech Republic in the past, disease awareness of lungworms among animal owners and veterinarians should be implemented [30].…”

“…Switzerland was entirely included, with differing levels of predicted suitability (Morgan et al ., 2009). The spread of A. vasorum , as predicted by the model, has also been recently described from previously parasite-free areas (or areas with unknown presence) such as Romania (Deak et al ., 2017), Belgium (Jolly et al ., 2015), the Czech Republic (Hajnalová et al ., 2017), Slovakia (Hurnikova et al ., 2013) and even mainland North America (Priest et al ., 2018). Here we show that A. vasorum has successfully established in the Swiss fox population, reaching regional prevalences of more than 80%.…”

“…Due to the unspecific clinical signs and difficulties in making a diagnosis, crenosomosis can be an important health issue for veterinary medicine (Cobb and Fisher, 1992;Rinaldi et al, 2007). Individual cases of the disease were recorded in domestic dogs (Cobb and Fisher, 1992;Reilly et al, 2000) and the prevalence of infection was estimated in some countries such as Germany (6.0%; Barutzki and Schaper, 2009), and the Czech Republic (2.0%; Hajnalová et al, 2018).…”
