L’Afrique de l’Ouest, avec 37,2 % du cheptel caprin continental, est l’un des principaux bassins d’élevage de cette espèce au rôle socio-économique particulièrement important. La chèvre est élevée dans des zones agroécologiques et dans des systèmes variés, mais elle est surtout présente dans les régions les plus arides où elle joue un rôle de subsistance et de sécurisation des systèmes agraires de premier plan. Les systèmes d’élevage sont surtout traditionnels (pastoral, agropastoral et sédentaire) et accessoirement périurbains. La productivité des élevages caprins est faible. L’âge à la première mise bas est en moyenne de 15,3 mois pour un intervalle entre mises bas moyen de 295,8 jours et une prolificité de 1,46. Celle-ci est cependant plus élevée chez la chèvre naine où elle peut atteindre 1,85. La mortalité présevrage des chevreaux est très élevée et constitue l’une des principales contraintes de l’élevage caprin en Afrique de l’Ouest. Elle est due aux pneumopathies, en particulier à la peste des petits ruminants, et aux parasitoses gastro-intestinales. Les performances de croissance sont également faibles avec des poids moyens à 12 mois d’âge ne dépassant 20 kg que chez quelques rares types génétiques. Pour améliorer la productivité en élevage caprin il a été proposé : a) de réduire la mortalité présevrage en mettant un accent particulier sur la lutte contre les parasitoses gastro-intestinales, b) de mettre en place une complémentation stratégique basée sur une utilisation digestive optimale d’aliments grossiers, et c) de développer des programmes d’amélioration génétique faisant appel à la gestion communautaire de base dans un contexte socioprofessionnel renforcé.

A simulation study using the Spatiotemporal Epidemiological Modeler was carried out on the potential usage of Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague ('black death'), as a biological weapon of terror. The study revealed widespread infections, incidences and deaths due to the infection all over Nigeria with bioweapon attacks originating from 2 Nigerian cities. Instituting an effective intervention program against the infection could save as many as 3.6 million lives within 10 days of the onset of the intervention program. Intervention programs could include social distancing policies and the use of antibiotics in addition to controlling the rodents and fleas vector population. Because of the relative ease of development of bioweapons and the desperation by terrorists to use any weapon at their disposal to achieve terror, there is an urgent need for an effective preparedness plan that can stop or limit the use of this category A bio-agent for biowarfare.

The influence of insect protein origins on broiler chicken meat parameters were studied using 135 day old Arbor acre birds subjected to three dietary treatments: Diet A comprised of a standard feed of the brand name ‘vital feed’ containing fishmeal as the major protein source (control), while Diet B and Diet C contained insect meal from African palm weevil larvae (Rhynchophorus phoenicis), respectively, winged termite (Macrotermes bellicosus) as replacement for fishmeal. Forty five broiler chicks were randomly assigned to each of the dietary treatments at the rate of fifteen chicks per replicate making three replicates per treatment in a completely randomised design. The experiment lasted for eight weeks. During this period, the birds were housed in similar cages and subjected to similar husbandry and sanitation practices, such that the only source of variation was the dietary treatments. After eight weeks of the experiment, carcass quality and organ weight measurements were analysed using appropriate statistical analysis. The result obtained showed that the broiler chickens fed insect meals performed significantly (P<0.05) better in terms of live weight gain (2,200.85±64.23 g and 2,046±58.40 g for Diet B and Diet C) compared to control. Carcass quality relating to defeathered weight and eviscerated weight also followed a similar trend with Diet B (2,187.74±62.72 g and 1,788.93±70.70 g), Diet C (2,015.83±74.62 g and 1,466.97±100.05 g), and Diet A (control; 1,526.47±47.40 g and 1,240.30±64.53 g). The records of cut-up parts and organ weight measurements were also significantly different (P<0.05) for the birds on insect meal (Diet B and Diet C) than those on fishmeal based diet (Diet A). The result showed that insect meal can effectively serve as a major source of protein in poultry feed formulation.
