The absorption and partitioning of N is determined by its availability and demand during the various phenological stages of the crop. In two experiments conducted in rainfed areas of the Mediterranean climate region of central Chile, legume-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rotations were compared to oat (Avena sativa L.)-wheat systems (with and without applications of N fertilizer). The objective was to assess the contribution of legumes to the availability of soil N and N uptake by the wheat crop following grain legumes. N mineralization and uptake, N use efficiency (NUE), and N uptake efficiency (NUpE) by wheat were evaluated at different phenological stages in 2010. Synchronization existed between accumulated soil N mineralization and N uptake by the wheat. N uptake by wheat was higher in Experiment II (Andean foothill) than in Experiment I (interior dryland). Grain yields after legumes ranged 60-110% and 72-103% of yields in the fertilized cereal rotation (oat-wheat) in Experiments I and II, respectively. There was high correlation between soil N availability vs. grain yield (R 2 = 0.84 and 0.64) and N uptake vs. grain yield (R 2 = 0.55 and 0.64) for Experiments I and II, respectively. Rotations with lupine (Lupinus spp.) and field peas (Pisum sativum L.) showed high NUE and NUpE in Experiment I, and Experiment II in pea. The lowest NUE was after oats with N fertilizers. It is concluded that wheat cultivated in both agro-ecological areas after grain legumes or green manure was more efficient in N uptake and use than cereal, especially when the latter was fertilized.

ResumoProcurou-se estabelecer a relação entre o Índice de área foliar no campo (IAF c ) de plantios clonais de Eucalyptus saligna Smith e três diferentes Índices de Vegetação (IV) obtidos de uma imagem Landsat 8/OLI: Índice de Vegetação da Diferença Normalizada (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, em inglês -NDVI), Índice da Razão Simples (Simple Ratio Index -SRI) e Índice de Vegetação Ajustado para o Solo (Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index -SAVI), com o objetivo de selecionar o melhor estimador do IAF por sensoriamento remoto (IAF SR ), obtendo assim a espacialização IAF nos talhões. O IAF c foi obtido utilizando o equipamento LAI-2000 e seu comportamento foi analisado em diferentes idades. Os índices de vegetação foram obtidos por meio de aritmética das bandas 4 e 5 do sensor. A análise de regressão linear simples foi utilizada para ajustar o modelo de estimativa de IAFSR (IAFSRi= β 0 + β 1 . IV i + ε i ), sendo os critérios de escolha as estatísticas de R2aj%, Syx% e análise de resíduos. Os resultados mostraram que o índice que melhor estimou o IAF SR foi o SRI (IAF SR =-5,6159 + 0,9716 . SRI), com R 2 aj %=67,0 e S yx %=12,5. Todos os modelos ajustados mostraram tendência em sobrestimar o IAF em valores inferiores a dois e subestimar o IAF a partir de valores superiores a 3,5 (NDVI e SRI) e superiores a três para SAVI. As equações obtidas para as diferentes idades não produziram melhora nas estimativas de IAF SR . AbstractThe relationship between the ground Leaf area index (LAI g ) from clonal plantations of Eucalyptus saligna Smith and three different vegetation indices (VI): Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Simple Ratio Index (SRI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) was evaluated in order to select the best IV to estimate the IAF by remote sensing (LAI RS ), and obtaining the spatial distribution of LAI in the stands. LAI g was measured using LAI-2000 and its behavior was examined at different ages. The vegetation indices were obtained from a Landsat 8/OLI through the arithmetic of the bands 4 and 5. The linear regression analysis was used to adjust the model LAIRS (LAIRSi= β 0 + β 1 . IV i + ε i ), and the criteria for selecting the best equation were the statistics R2adj%, Syx% and residual analysis. The results showed that the best vegetation index to estimate IAF SR was SRI (LAI RS =-5.6159 + 0.9716 . SRI ), resulting R 2 adj %=67.0 and S yx =12.5%. The results of all adjusted models tended towards overestimation of LAI in values lower than two and underestimation in values above 3.5 (NDVI e SRI) and above three for SAVI. The equations for different ages produced no improvement in LAI RS .

This study was conducted in the Karaker Barikot forest of district Swat Pakistan to measure the relation of average tree height, diameter increment and age of Pinus roxburghii to the sustainable volume production. Total forest area was 724 hectares. Systematic sampling intensity 2.5% was used for the study area. Data was collected from 119 plots (1 plot= 0.1 hectare. The tree height (m), diameter increment (cm) and age (years) were measured using Spegial Relascope, Increment borer, and Diameter tape. The maximum tree height was estimated 23 m of 70 year age, and minimum 8.5 m of 13 year age. The maximum diameter increment was found (5.4 cm for lower diameter classes (12 cm) and minimum for 2.2 cm of higher diameter classes (64 cm). The total average number of trees and volume were found 1314, 1104 m³ respectively. The R² values were (.37, .98, .99 of tree height, increment and age with diameter classes (12-64 cm) respectively. The R² value (.988) was found significant for age and increment. It was concluded that there was significant relationship to the average age and height of Pinus roxburghii to the volume production. It was further concluded that the maximum growth increment significantly put the forest on the way to sustainability.
