Factors Influencing Seasonal and Daily Dynamics of the Genus Stomoxys Geoffroy, 1762 (Diptera: Muscidae), in the Adamawa Plateau, Cameroon

Abstract: e rangelands of the Vina Division on the Adamawa Plateau are densely infested with Stomoxyinae, but little is known about their species composition and ecology. A trap-transect survey was carried out in three villages: Galim, Mbidjoro, and Velambai, using Nzi (n 3), Vavoua (n 3), and Biconical (n 3) traps, all baited with octenol. ree traps of each trap type were set in each of the study villages, and collections were carried out daily. In total, 3,762 Stomoxys spp. were collected from October 2016 to Ju… Show more

“…Rainfall has also been reported to affect Stomoxys activity. The increase in rainfall causes a critical factor for eggs to hatch and the larvae to survive and successfully develop into pupae (Lendzele et al 2019). The low number of flies trapped in the South Kuta district may be caused by increase rainfall in these months.…”

“…Many parasitic dipterans depend on the seasonal activity of their hosts, which serve for the development of larvae (Shapiro, 1995;Paur & Gray, 2011). In the tropics, seasonality often depends on the alternation of rainy and dry seasons (Mullens & Peterson 2005;Godwin et al, 2017;Sevidzem & Zinga-Koumba, 2019). In a temperate climate, temperature and precipitation have the main impact on the seasonal cycles (Lysyk, 1993;Szyniszewska & Tatem, 2014;Semelbauer et al, 2018).…”

“…Mean humidity values ranging from 30-50% are favorable for the flight activity of Stomoxys spp. (Lendzele et al 2019). However in some Dipterans the peak activity attains at RH between 30 and 90% (Hogsette et al 1989;Rowley et al 1968).…”
