Factors influencing left atrial volume in a population with preserved ejection fraction: Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction or clinical factors?

Abstract: LA enlargement was independently associated with moderate and severe DD, but not with mild DD. Furthermore, obesity and lower hemoglobin were associated with LAV independently of DD.

“…Major limitation of the present study is that we could not assess all echocardiographic parameters required for the diagnosis of LV diastolic dysfunction in the latest American Society of Echocardiography guideline. Several importance parameters in assessing LV diastolic function, such as LA volume [35,36], were not measured in all study participants, and we used old formula (Teichholtz formula) in the present study because echocardiographic data were collected by previous guidelines. Therefore, further studies are needed to confirm the relationship between subclinical LV change and prehypertension and hypertension in patient with DM.…”

“…Therefore, the aims of the present study were to determine (1) the influence of endogenous estrogens on the angiotensin‐forming pathways in cardiac myocytes (CMs) and non‐myocyte (NCMs) cell membranes from normotensive and hypertensive hearts and (2) to assess the relationships between intracellular RAS enzymatic activities and cardiac function and structure. Given that diastolic dysfunction can manifest in postmenopausal women without overt elevations in blood pressure (BP) (Kane et al, ; Lee et al, ), we used ovariectomized and sham‐operated adult WKY and SHR to determine the modulatory role of estrogens on intracellular Ang II and angiotensin‐1‐7 (Ang‐1‐7) forming enzymatic activity and on gene expression of RAS‐related components in cardiac cells.…”

“…30 Although prognostically relevant, some other factors that have been described to influence left atrial size such as adipositas or low blood haemoglobin were not adjusted for in our analysis. 31,32 Summary Knowledge about the assessment of cardiac function using CMR at 3 Tesla in patients suffering from AIS is limited. Comparing standard segmented cine SSFP sequences and accelerated CRT sequences, the latter showed a sufficient level of agreement for the determination of key functional parameters but requires determination of specific normal values with regard to spatial and temporal resolution.…”
