Factors in Students' Dishonesty

Abstract: This paper summarizes the findings from surveys of faculty and students on academic dishonesty conducted at an American university. Two separate surveys administered to a sample of 364 engineering students and 80 faculty indicated the attitudes and occurrences of cheating. While 62% of the students admitted to copying homework or laboratory reports, only 51% of the faculty considered this cheating. Students (38%) and faculty (86%) believe “second-time” cheaters should be expelled from the university. Of studen… Show more

“…heating is currently one of the major problems in education (Singhal, 1982) and has long been recognized as such in higher education (Davis, Grover, Becker, & McGregor, 1992;Leming, 1978;McCabe, Treviño, & Butterfield, 2001). Research indicates that a high percentage of undergraduate students cheat (Collison, 1990;Jendrek, 1989;Singhal;Stern & Havlicek, 1986;Tom & Borin, 1988) and that this number has increased dramatically over the past 3 decades (McCabe et al).…”

Cheating is also prevalent among graduate students, with studies indicating that they are as likely to cheat as their undergraduate counterparts (Brown, 1995).…”

“…Research conducted since the 1940s1 has shown that dishonest practices are used by a large proportion of students: rates vary from over 50% [Liska, 1978;Singhal, 1982;Hetherington, Feldman, 1964;Stannard, Bowers, 1970;McCabe, Trevino, Butterfield, 2001] to over 70% [Bowers, 1964;Baird, 1980], as reported by foreign universities in various periods of time.…”

“…The literature has consistently found relatively high levels of cheating among college students (Baird, 1980;Singhal, 1982;Sisson and Todd-McMancillas, 1984;Tom and Borin, 1988;Green and Saxe, 1992;Meade, 1992;Sims, 1993;Brown and Abramson, 1999;Brown and McInerney, 2001). Studies have also investigated the relationship between cheating behavior and individual characteristics.…”
