Factors Contributing to the Development of Intelligible Speech Among Prelingually Deaf Persons

Abstract: This paper is a descriptive study of the incidence of semi-intelligible or better speech among 108 NTID students with congenital hearing loss greater than 91 dB. Statistical comparisons between semi-intelligible (in spontaneous speech) speakers and unintelligible deaf speakers were made in the areas of academic achievement, parental and educational background, and oral-aural skills.
